Hi!
My local feeder supply company orders from a bunch of different hatcheries (Hoovers is one of them). I am looking to buy 3-4 Olive Egger hens when they have another set of hatchlings come in, however, they range in price from $10 - $20 per sexed chick. My first question is, is this a fair price for a sexed OE hen that has not been vaccinated or trimmed?
Second, I requested stock that would produce dark olive eggs. I realize that there is not guarantee, but what should I be asking/looking for to make sure I am getting a bird that will produce a really dark egg?
If you have suggestions on another way to purchase some OE's, I'm open!
Thanks!

When purchasing your stock from a hatchery, you have very little assurance of the quality of what those birds are going to produce for you. The price well that depends on what you think is fair, the hatchery themselves is charging up to $10 per chick for a sexed olive egger depending on type (ie hoovers has two different olive egger crosses this year, one being higher priced than the other). If you want assurance of getting the really dark Olive color, you're going to be much better served to find someone local who is working their own lines and purchase through them, they have worked to develop quality rather than quantity which is the opposite of large scale commercial production such as at a hatchery.

I only found 1 "local" party that is 2 hours away, charging $40 per sexed OE hen and they wouldn't promise a dark colored olive egg, lol. I think my options are pretty limited.

Thank you for the info!
