This sounds like a good theory (it's being genetic). I bought 7 red stars from the same hatchery. This summer I lost my Rosemary. she just stopped laying and got skinier & skinier until she was gone. I wasn't brave enough to look inside her. Now another (Nutmeg) is doing the same thing. They are around the 2 year mark like yours. They all laid eggs every day (even through the winter the first year) and never went broody. Their bodies probably just can't take it.
It's sweet that Ivy is staying with Rosemary. When my own Rosemary was dying, my rescued OEGB hen Boots stayed with her even though when Rosemary was healthy she was constantly attacking Boots.
I'm so sorry you are going through this, you've certainly had more than your share of sadness, it's not fair.
