Internal laying again?

Sometimes internal laying will occur as a result of an infection of the oviduct(salpingitis), where the oviduct becomes impacted with infected egg material and pus which is often referred to as "lash egg".
Thanks so much for that information I just emailed it to my vet to look into. Do you suggest prescription antibiotics or could I use Fish Mox? I guy I work with uses that with his chickens he said a half a tab or 125mg twice a day.

Yes we have had the feed discussion before.

Thanks as always for your wealth of knowledge on so many subjects and for continuing to help educate us new comers to raising chickens. You are such a valuable resource.

Again thanks.

I’m so sorry.

I'm sorry about your hen:hugs

You are correct that internal laying does not "spread". Sadly, there is no prevention either. I feel that their are contributors to internal laying-genetics is a big one, a hen being too fat and respiratory illness. I'm sure there may be other factors that contribute to reproductive problems too.

Internal laying/reproductive problems, as you have already found out yourself (and if you look at the ER posts here on BYC) are very common. The best you can do is make her comfortable as described in the previous post by @Eggcessive and look back at any suggestions made on the previous thread from your other hen.

I do understand the frustration and heartache that comes with this. I have lost several to reproductive problems and am currently working on seeing if non-hatchery birds will fare better. Only time will tell.

Very good video with explanation of internal laying:

WR, I have wondered the EXACT same thing about hatchery vs. non hatchery. Please do keep us posted. I don’t really know how to find a reputable breeder and all of mine are hatchery stock. I think my feed store uses Privette.

@casportpony would probably be the person to ask about an appropriate antibiotic for salpingitis and the dosage. I'm in the UK and we don't have access to antibiotics other than via a vet or doctor, so it is not something I am knowledgeable about.

Has she laid anything since the vet removed that material from her oviduct?

Amoxicillin dose for chickens is 57 mg per pound twice a day.

Will Amoxicillin help with the salpingitis.

I would also like to apologize to @Chicken Girl1 for this discussion getting started in her thread after having to deal with such a tough situation. I had never heard of internal laying and thought it might be related to my girls situation. So please accept my apology. I am very sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your condolences. I'm glad you are finding out how to help your girl here!

Start with the Livestock Conservancy to begin your research. Pick the breed you think you want to work with, then start researching lines, breeders, etc. Also search BYC for members that may have had a particular breed or line you are interested in, contact them and ask questions. It can be a slow process finding what you think you want. I searched for close to a year, but still have a long way to go to even know if this line will even do what I hope it will do.

Thanks. Honestly, I just want my hens to be healthy and happy. I have no dreams about breeding, shows, eggs, or anything else except happy hens. I absolutely hate the idea of them coming down with reproductive issues down the road.

Curious... what do you hope your line will do?
