Okay here is a potential show pullet I brought in to weigh and look over tonight. She is 6 months old, daughter of Maximus and Queen. I don't have many Marans that are in decent enough feather to show this year unfortunately so this little lady may be it. I have struggled with mites that chew lines in the feathers this year so the majority of my Marans have lines in their tails. :( The wet summer we've had has contributed to it I think as the birds were unable to dust bathe as frequently as they need to in order to naturally keep the mites under control as they normally do. We have sprayed them with permethrin and used Ivermectin pour on over and over, so we're hoping we are getting the mites under control.

Anyway, I may change my mind and decide not to take her as my mind changes quite frequently. She is far from perfect so I'm not expecting her to place extremely well if at all, but she has lovely topline and copper I think. Her faults are: she is undersized by a little over 1 pound at this point (she weighs 4.4 lbs; pullet weight per the SOP is 5.5 lbs), her eyes are marbled, her legs are set just a little too far back, her comb isn't great but no DQ's, and she could use more mass in her breast. Her good qualities are that she is wide the entire length of her back, good wide open tail when viewed from the back, well feathered legs, good copper color in hackle, tighter feathering with no excess butt fluff, good topline and tail angle, good straight keel, and her general type and body condition is good.

The specks on her back is mud. She's been free ranging and it's been muddy outside so she is dirty. If I definitely decide to show her she will get a spa treatment soon. lol

So here she is in true redneck crazy chicken lady fashion.. photographed on my kitchen counter. RedBanks would get a kick out of that. :)

Pardon my cluttered kitchen counters. It's been a rough week. I used a flash in some of the pictures because the shots were too dark without a flash.

And I clean and sanitize my counter afterwards. The end. :D

agree with you 100%
mass is very important when showing .

love her body type long and low to the ground ..

I have a lot to catch up .

CHOOKS MAN!!!! It's so nice for you to be back with us!! You have been greatly missed around here!
:wee

I'm glad you like my pullet. She's is a sassy little thing that doesn't like to be held. She isnt wild.. just wants to be left alone. She is tame and not at all afraid of me. I can pet her and catch her easily but she struggles in my hands. Gotta wear her down a little. Lol. I'm actually going to weigh her again tonight to see if she has gained any. :)

Hooray!!! CHOOKS MAN IS BACK
Your knowledge is so deep and extensive in the Marans breeding. I was feeling pretty down and this thread has been a little lax in the A,B,C's of breeding without you. I am on my first set of birds that I want to call mine! They have all stopped laying, as winter is coming fast in the Pacific North West. Washing State. We are down to about 10 hours of daylight. Plenty of time for reading and learning. Welcome back Chooks Man
