International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I got bored tonight so here are some random pictures. I had other pictures but they wouldn't load.

@marchick,

Nice looking chooks! The BCM Cockerel front right in the first pic has good copper and eye color. I do like watching them grow out. My youngest BCMs are almost 3 and 4 weeks old. They are in that ugly half fuzz half feather stage. Like you I’m hoping for at least one good Cockerel to work with.

Take Care,
Keith

Thank you, I have White, Birchen, Blue Birchen, Blue Copper ,Black Copper and Splash Copper in that pen. I think they are cute even when they go through that ugly phase. They get to a certain point and they really change. I love my Marans. My husband wants me to get rid of most of them because feed is going to go high they say.

@marchick,

I agree Marans are my favorite too! Marans are my only chooks except for a 7-year old Welsummer Hen that has earned her place in my pen. Millie is 7 years old and despite being smaller than the Marans she is the lead hen and maintains the peace without being a bully. I use her too teach my grow outs, especially the cockerels, about good chooks behavior. I’m focusing on BCM and BLCMs until I get them as close to their SOP as possible. Hopefully Birchen, Cuckoos and Whites are in my future.

Take a Care,
Keith

@Chooks man I will have 1 marans, 1 british araucana, 1 greek hooded roo + 1-2 bresse cockerels (about 5-6 mo), 2 marans cockerels (6 and 4 mo), 2 cream legbar cockerels (3 mo) and 2 speckled sussex cockerels (2-3 mo). how can I house them together? would they kill each other? the little ones might be caged and the big ones can roam around.

you can not house them together they will kill the yougest cockerels .
you can house the rooster in one pen ,and the young cockerels in other pen .

I usually pen them recording to they age not they number . they have to be born in a same month to be grouped together . I always pen a adult gentle and bossy rooster with a young cockerels to keep order .

when I pen roosters together ,they have to be penned in in a same night . I ll no add new rooster or cockerels to a establish rooster flock .

those eggs are from the solid black ,splash ,black copper and blue copper from Liza s line . they are now 60 to 62 g . waiting for them to reach or pass 65g to start incubating them . never incubate eggs under 65g minimum .

the colour of those eggs is 5 and 6 happy about that because the pullets who laid them are all have a correct conformation and tail ,all good .

Does this chick look like a Blue Copper Marans? Do blue chicks have a good deal of variation of color, light to dark grey? It came from a Black Copper over Blue or Splash hen. I can get more detailed pics of needed. The chick in question is on the left front in the first picture, middle in the second pic, and far right in the lest picture.

This is normally the group I get our table eggs from. After a predator wiped out all my FBCMs I started hatching eggs from this group as replacement layers. I've got 8 more eggs hatching from this group (BBS) tomorrow.

Edit: I also asked a similar question here. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/blue-copper-marans-chicks.1318884/

@UThobbyfarmer,

The chick in question is a BLCM albeit a very light blue. BCM x BLCM Mating will give you 50/50 BCM/BLCM with BLCMs being a darker blue. BCM x Splash Copper will give you 100% BLCMs with most if not all being a light blue color. Hope this helps.

It does help. Quite a bit. I didn't realize there was that much variation between blue chicks of similar lineage. Now I know. Thanks again!
