Chooksman, Look at that pitiful tail. I am sure it would eventually grow in but we are not going to wait that long.

I am aware that split wing is a defect that results in DQ in show, but how terrible is it to use such a bird as a breeder if everything else on the bird is good? I know it is a recessive gene and would be passed to the offspring, so obviously it is something to cull for but it's hard to cull my nicest cockerel.

I will post pictures of the cockerel in a few. I haven't taken pictures of the wing fanned out, but I am thinking he has split wing. Split wing causes weakness in the wing so the bird doesn't hold his primary feathers up tight with the wing set. You can see this in the pictures.

I was just wondering what you are looking for when you cull chicks. So you are only culling for body type. I need more training to be able to cull that young. I have a difficult time even culling at all till about 12 weeks.

the culling goes with a breeding program .
let say if I m breeding for type than i cull any thing does not rach the point I m looking for .
if I m breeding for dark eggs .than I cull any pullet doesn t lay dark eggs .
if I m breeding for comb and eyes etc I will cull any thing doesn t performe .

the breeder has to know what they are breeding for ,than the culls are easier to take out .they will stand out .

a lot breeding are lost in trying to breed for the SOP .but they don t have any breeding program .they just mate roo to hens and hatch a lt a cull a lot and keep chooks with 1000 fault .they will never find they way out .

design your breeding program if you want to be efficient .

Chooksman, The one thing I do not like about my Birchen is they are so very slow to mature. Take about 6 months to get the tail. Way too slow! Huge bird and still all the feathers not in. For a long time they look like sick ostriches. Lol

your Birchen have a gorgeous tail ,baybe take longer to fill ,but in the end of a day it is gorgeous and correct .

using him it is not doesn t worry me .what paire he come out from is a real problem ,who is carring the gene . witch line has this fault .

to breed from him you have to be sure ,you are not mating him to hens from a same line ,
I will not work with him in a open pen breeding ,but I ll work with in a selecting pairing with hen breed for comb and no other fault except high tail .
he is only good to breed a good tait and body mass and a gorgeous copper quality .

your cockerel has 3 majore fault .Split wing .bad comb and not complete shoulder pattern .

He came from Duke and one of the hens he was penned with from my line. Duke came from Harvey. It could have been any of the hens he was with that produced him. Im thinking it was Xena and its cropping up out of the blue line but who knows because Ive never encountered split wing before. I am kicking myself for not single mating Duke this year. Live and learn. But Duke is carrying split wing without a shadow of a doubt.
