International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Thank you. Daisy is mine and the neighborhood children's favorite chicken. She loves being held and cuddled. I'll have to look for pics of her feet, she is my clean legged girl. I'm hoping her first egg is not too far off. She's showing signs she's getting close, inspects and sits on the nest a few times daily, started squatting for me the other day when i was stroking her back and her face is slowly getting redder. When it is cloudy her comb looks really red but in direct sunlight it looks a little pinker. I know i need a better cockerel but marans are a little hard to find in my area, and with covid-19 and me being a type 1 diabetic i've been reluctant to travel. I have not left the house since march due to dr's orders.

let her do more growing and see what type eggs she will lay .
clean legs is not a big problem ,easy fix .when I m looking for is how straight are her legs and how wide are they spaced .
is your cockerel related to her ?

They are hatchmates. When i picked up the chicks, he showed me the pen the eggs came from, it had about 15 to 20 hens in it with 1 rooster. I thought that rooster was so pretty, really big, friendly but and i didnt know it at the time he did have a high tail set. This was my first time seeing marans in person, he showed me the eggs the girls were laying. He had a color chart guide that i see alot of people on here with marans have and held a egg to it, it was between a 5 and a 6. He then said that they had been and i quote *laying hard since november* and the color was starting to lighten up for the season if that makes any sense.

good and bad .
bad thing they share a same sire responsible for high tail trait .

Good thing they are not true sibling ,they only share 50% of the gene . pullet has 50 % from her mama , I think a tail come from her mama .

so you can breed from them but you need to hatch a large number .because will be a lot of culls . but few very nice one like they mother .

Thank you Chooksman means a lot to me to hear you like them. My biggest worries are parasitic white and mossy. I am going to name Black Jack's brother Ace.

Chooksman, we have kept Blaze to make sure we get a good replacement. He is still mean and his time is running out. Here within the week he will be going to freezer camp. Unless you feel that we should keep him longer until these finish growing out. I know you said before I could butcher him but want to make sure. Sad he had to be mean.
