International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I really need to get some updated pictures. Even though these pics are only 3 days old, they are already showing a lot more copper! It's very strange to me!

But they are currently going through their second juvenile molt.

Question, all 3 of the marans have at least 2 or 3 white primary feathers. It is my understanding they may shed these and regrow black during one of their first adult molts. Do you think it is possible to happen during this juvenile molt?

don t worry about the whte primary feathers they molt away .

Rusty is the same breeding as my birds..... exact same breeding, so lots of copper and wrong tail.

Thanks Redbanks and @Chooks man! Im not loving Rusty's tail but Im hoping I can correct it with good breeding. All of the cockerels in the FRF group have high tails. I will try to get pics of my FRF pullet that will go with Rusty. Im thinking her tail isnt going to be as high and her back is longer. The LA pullet will be one of Cooper's girls. They are 2 different lines.

Love the pictures of Rusty and Cooper!  Good names.  Rusty has a lot of copper just like my cockerels.  I think you are right about his tail but I really like him.  He is consistent with my birds, a lot of copper and high tail set.  We will have to see though cause he has such a little tail!  LOL

Cooper is very nice.  Are they the same age?  That is a beautiful pullet!

Cooper's group (LA) is 5 months and Rusty's group (FRF) is 4 months. I am pleased with my LA group. Cooper and his girls are growing out very nice. My FRF cockerels are still in their awkward phase. Lol :)

Copper is gorgeous . he have a great copper and a lot of it ,he will be well colored when adult . . I do love his back long ,wide all the way to the tail. great tail . his asset will be his hackle ,Rich red Copper ,a lot of it ,will cover most of his shoulder. I like him a lot lot . extra feathers on his shank ,not a big deal like most of people make of it . I ll breed from him just for his back and his gorgeous hackle. chooks man
Thank you! Glad you like him. Hoping he makes me some pretty babies. :)

After careful consideration of all points about which Roo for breeding, I have decided to keep the BIG roo that is over melanized. My 1 yr old hens are only laying an avg 56g egg and would like that size to be bumped up. It seems that all the cockerels from the 1 yr old have lots of colour, in many cases too much. I realize I will probably be about 2 generations to increase egg size and colour back. But on the bright side I can work on a solid black Marans project at the same time with the over melanized hens.

you are absolutely wrong about how you are going to breed your marans .
you seem to me you made your mind up good luck to you .

Black Marans variety is not a over melanized Black copper .

the Black variety are E/E extended black family genetic
the Black copper Are ER /ER Hackle family genetic .

So can you tell me how are you planning to breed a E chooks from a ER chooks ?
I ll be very interested to know how you are going to do it .

Good luck to you .

here your best pair ,expect a great result . she have a correct body type a deep chest great tail he is not going to add much to her any way ,but he will give you a cockerel ( cockerels inherit a lot stuff from they mom almost 100% ) because of the sex linked genes when you get a cockerel from her than you can mate him to her and start a line ( if she have a nice eggs ). chooks man
I agree, I think these are my best bet. I do have a couple young cockerels that might work better with the other pullets, and a blue copper cockerel. I will try to post some better pictures but it's hard to get them pose for me. I been busy building 6 pens so when I get ready to test mate I'll have everything organized, also i got them all marked and been making spread sheets to keep up with everthing. I'm hoping by spring I'll be ready.

Here is the little FRF pullet that will go with Rusty the high tailed cockerel. She and Rusty are the same line. She never stands still so she is hard to get pics of. They are both 4 months old. Her copper looks a little on the lighter side. Hoping her tail angle stays low and doesnt hike up too much as she reaches POL to correct Rusty's high tail.
