International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Not any really noticeable cockerels with this coloring. She is the most extreme, but 2 years ago, I had a hen who was mottled, but not as pronounced as this girl, and it showed up more as she got older on her 2 year molt. My husband likes me to reduce in winter because I don't have a lot of indoor coop space. He's right, of course, unless I could afford to build more coops, I'm forced to reduce to about 40 birds in winter. She was sold to a lady looking for older hens. This is likely a granddaughter of that hen.

keep her. you might hatch a mottled cockerel next year.

I know all about trying to keep numbers down. Sometimes it's hard to choose. My walk in coop space is limited to about 25. I have 2 small coops but I like everyone together for winter because it makes it easier for me.

She is just so pretty and unusual. It would be a very interesting project for spring.

Do you plan to breed her?

I am really thinking about it. I wish I had a smaller breeding pen, I might be able to get away with using the horse trailer or something so I know whose eggs I am getting easier.
