Welcome to the Marans thread....
Maybe someone here with more knowledge than I can offer you some hope.
But like I said in your other thread, back breeding any males from your darkest egg layers back to mom/grandmothers, is I believe your only option.
But any progeny will not be "pure" for many generations. How long that takes I don't know.

How did you get your Marans you have now?
You can't get hatching eggs either?
Where are you located?

Hope someone else can give you a better answer... Good luck

I see.... Thanks. I see your reasoning to try and keep them pure.
@Chooks man can more than likely tell you how many generations it might take to get back to a "pure" cockerel. He's very knowledgeable in our Marans. I know he's been busy with his incubators lately. But I'm sure some others might be able to help also.
@Bantambird any thoughts?

how many eggs did your pullet lay? are all of them the same colour?

I have 7 hens 4 of them laying dark brown eggs rest laying light eggs, they are sisters

they came from 3 hens, all mothers were laying dark eggs.. so i think the father rooster have mix gen
It will be tough to breed with such a limited pool, but not impossible. Keep a careful eye and document. If you can start single breeding them, so that you know who laid which egg, then you can start marking which chicks come from which hens. It will be very close, but you can take a son from one dark egg layer, put him over your others. 2 trios, keep two sons, and match them up so you can take the chicks from those trios and selectively cross back again. It could limit inbreeding, but will still be a lot of work. I try not to over use a rooster so he is not breeding granddaughters, I tend to cycle out older cocks, keep older hens though. 2 to 3 years, replace the cock bird.
