International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

It is cold and drizzling rain here so catching all suspects today is going to take more effort than I care to exert. I don’t have any experience doing the vent check anyway but I was hoping find one that was different and gain some experience. Maybe the weather will be better tomorrow. For now I’ll try catch someone on the coop camera.

I’ll attach a couple comb shots from today if anyone wants to try to guess based on comb development

Oreo BR
Marshmallow EE

My guess is Oreo the BR.

Pretty speckles no matter who laid it. ❤️
I have been expecting her to start laying for a while. She has had a bright red comb and wattles for a few weeks and I have caught her practicing her egg song a couple times. She is my first barred rock so I have never seen a barred rock egg I always thought they were light in color. I’m sure I’ll figure it out soon enough.

This is what I see from your pictures. Others may see different.

Although her face looks nice and red, I would expect Betty's comb and wattles to plump up a bit more before she lays from this picture.

Penny, same at Betty. (She is a cutie! Looks like my Bailey.)

Blue and Marshmallow EE's generally don't get big wattles but I think their combs will plump up a bit more too.

I've never had BR but they are known as pretty good layers. I think light brown eggs. Oreo's comb and wattles look pretty well developed and red and plump.

It is always hard waiting for new pullets to start laying. Then I'm always trying to figure out who laid which egg. :barnie Seems they always give us a puzzle!

One other possibility is that Gena my Jersey Giant started laying again. She stopped laying in October when she went broody. Then she went into her molt and started dropping feathers. Her feathers have grown completely back in but she hasn’t really got her big girl comb and wattles back like when she was laying. Attached is a picture of an egg she laid just before she went broody and one of her today. Her eggs didn’t alone out this speckled but once in a while I would get a really pretty one from her.

Wow! That's great!

What about that GLW? I noticed her in the other picture too.

I have 2 GLW and one SLW one of the GLW, Goldie is currently on the back end of a hard molt still not laying yet. The other Lacy lays the long skinny ones in the top row. The SLW lays the bottom row sometimes lightly speckled but never as dark base color as the new one.

These 2 Wyandottes are the only ones that have laid anything since November. Both laid on Monday neither since. Also the new egg was not in the nest box it was right in the middle of the coop like whoever laid it was caught by surprise
