International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Dude, great answer! If only I knew the language... so basically, if I hatch out a french BCM and a chicks comes out with a light beak, that means it will be a rooster? If this is the case I am also assuming that there are chicks who hatch out with dark beaks that end up being roosters as well. Is typical for a pullet to hatch out with a light beak or nah?

I believe he is saying it is genetically improbable that a pullet will hatch out with penguiny down colors and a light beak.

It is however completely possibly for a cockerel to hatch out as a penguiny or a dark colored chick.

Hope I've got that right.

It also appears that a light beak is only possible when a BCM chick has 2 doses of a specific gene, it is a sexlinked gene which means only the males receive the needed 2 doses which can cause the white beak.

Pullets can not possibly receive 2 doses of the gene.

pullet should never have a lighter beak, genetically impossible .

if she have a lighter beak than it is not a pure BCM.

we try to keep the balance here between the Melanotic and the Dermal Inhibitor .

chooks man

The funniest thing happened to me tonight. Antonio has 11 pullets. They are his and they always are with him. They don't mingle with the others much except when I am doling out the treats. I decided to put all the Ameraucana pullets in one coop tonight. Two of them are Antonio's. I waited till all the chickens were on the roost and then I went to Antonio's coop for the Ameraucanas. Well.... black Ameraucanas are WILD, they have never tamed down, the Wheaten Ameraucanas are the sweetest birds I own but the blacks are crazy, so when I picked up the Black Am she started screaming like a predator had her and my BCM pullet came after me, hackle raised and wings spread. She was going to save her coop mate. She did the same when I picked up the second Black Am. I can't imagine what she would do if she had chicks. I was proud of the brave pullet.... Antonio didn't even try to save them.

That is how all three of my ameraucanas are. Blue, Splash, and Black. The black one has been a whiner since day 1, constantly peeping like they do when they're lost or cant see their mates, but she was never alone. I call her 'Squeegee' now :)

This is all great! Thank you guys!

Antonio just wanted some zzz's, he has been caring for 11 ladies all day haha.
My AMS are the most flighty birds on the property, I always thought I raised them wrong until I found out it differs between the variety/strain. (Mine are BBS and they are bonkers)
