International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

5 hatched so far. Natasha’s chick, Chanel’s chick and Esme’s chick, the olive egger and a silkie. Chanel’s chick died, it appeared to have broken its neck getting out the egg. No cuckoos hatched yet, there are six of their eggs remaining after candling. I’m worried because all my eggs hatched and the marans I bought have not yet, but it is still day 21. I’ll post pictures on another post.
Sometimes my Marans hatch a little later than their fellow eggs. I'll cross my fingers for you!

Sounds like you and your little ones are going to reel him in with cuteness... 🤣

What other breeds do you have?
Definitely going to do my best and try! 😆
I have a Rhode Island Red, Gold Laced Brahma, Black Jersey Giant, Easter Egger, Blue laced Red Wyandotte, 2 silkies, and the Black Copper Maran. They’re so cute, they all have their little cliques and personalities. The EE and Wyandotte are the most skiddish and don’t like being held but I’m guessing it’s because they are still pretty young. They’re the same age as the Maran.
Chicken math is real! I adopted the RIR and a silkie from a lady who didn’t really have a yard (also her HOA doesn’t allow chickens so she secretly had them). That week I ended up buying several chicks and two pullets. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I went from 2 to 8 chickens real fast!

Sad news: no more chicks. I checked each egg and only found two DCM chicks compared to the six I thought I had candling. I think my next move is buying DCM pullets/a trio. The breeder I used has great stock and I don’t think it was his fault, so I might see if I can arrange something when he has spares chooks. The hatched chicks are all doing well.
If the blue is make I think I might replace Loki for him so I can pass on more of Chanel’s genes, but maybe I’ll be lucky and get two hens.
Olive egger almost certainly male as I thought.

I have had a person contact me on eBay asking if I post eggs to the states. I told them that it would be costly and I am sold out of Marans eggs until next week.
I suggested that I could ask around for any one across the pond selling Marans eggs, and wondered if anyone here would be interested in me putting you in contact with them. They want any colour as long as they are ‘heritage’ marans. I explained that marans are not a heritage breed in the US but I figured they meant from good blood.
I charge around £20($25) for half a dozen plus £5 postage (it would be £30 postage to USA so it shows they are willing to pay good money for good birds) so I’m assuming that’s the sort of profit you could get.

I don’t want to sound like chickens are all about the money but I genuinely want to help this person get some good marans and thought to come to this group first for exactly that.

Eggs are tough to ship overseas, due to them not liking elevation changes in flying. It might take too long to move eggs via boat, thats why usually adult birds are what is moved, plus dealing with customs for live animals can be a pain.
You know, I once had an Englishman contact me about sending some legbars back over the pond. He had had golden legbars, and was looking for those, which are actually different from cream legbars. Luckily, I knew what he was talking about, but I did not have any golden legbars. They have never imported those to the states, only the cream legbars. Golden legbars are very similar to cream legbars, but no crest, and white eggs, and no cream gene. Pretty much golden crele leghorn in my opinion, but with more pronounced autosexing.

there are heritage marans inthe US. I don't remember the name of the breeder who imported them from france (little something is the name).

@Bantambird aren't your marans heritage?

Lock down day for the BBS Silvers..I'm going to post 6 candle pics numbered.

Can I get eyes on them with thoughts on development or quitters?

I ran 30-32% humidity (none to very little water) and need to decide lockdown %.. Outside temp is 77 f @ 47%. Inside is 72 @ 52%.
My thought is between 40-50% for lockdown but I'd like others to chime in...

I would say those percentages would be fine considering after the first pip the humidity goes up anyway. Personally, I would shoot for 50% just to err on the side of caution.
