International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

5 hatched so far. Natasha’s chick, Chanel’s chick and Esme’s chick, the olive egger and a silkie. Chanel’s chick died, it appeared to have broken its neck getting out the egg. No cuckoos hatched yet, there are six of their eggs remaining after candling. I’m worried because all my eggs hatched and the marans I bought have not yet, but it is still day 21. I’ll post pictures on another post.

I thought the BlCM appeared paler and with a yellower belly than Chanel did when she hatched, but looking back at photos I don’t think this is true.
The Olive egger is almost certainly a cockerel (sex linkage).
Five silkies hatched this year, and all different colours, I think this is a blue gold partridge one.
I’ll check again later for the rest of the eggs.

Cuteness overload ♥️...congrats and hopefully the shipped eggs and all the rest hatch for you.

How many eggs left to hatch?

Cute little chonky babies 😍

He's 2-3 months?
I would expect crowing any time, I have 2 that are 10 weeks old tomorrow. The one started crowing between 8-9 weeks, I haven't heard the other crow yet, but the one that's crowing is the dominant of the two so that stands to a possible reason why the other isn't. No definitive time frame tho.
This guy is probably 7.5weeks old now. I have a couple pullets that are at the 3month mark and two other girls that are about his age. (Different breeds.)
He seems to be the only obvious boy out of the bunch. (They were all supposed to be girls). He’s been pretty quiet, makes tiny peeps, but hasn’t tried to crow at all yet. I’ll keep an eye out since it seems that will change fairly soon. He doesn’t act dominant with the chicks his age, but he does every now and then peck at a 3mo silkie I have. (it usually only happens when I’m handing out treats).
I grew up with a pet chicken, but she was older when we had adopted her. Now that my hubby and I have the space, I wanted to have chickens again, but I’ve never raised chicks before so this is a bit newer to me. He would be my first rooster, and I’m really hoping to win over my neighbors so I can keep him.
I really appreciate you all… this forum has been SO helpful! 🤗

I hope you keep him. marans roos are not as loud as some other breeds. especially if there is no other roo around to compete with.

Keep posting pics of him. We would love to watch him grow along with ya !! 🙂

I’ve been bringing them a fresh eggs here and there 😆 since I adopted the two older hens. The others are still too young (2-3mo). They are all for eggs! The wife said she’s not worried if we end up with a rooster, but her hubby feels differently. He did come over to hang out with all our chickies so maybe he’ll warm up to the idea. 🤞
This little roo is just so sweet and cuddly!
Sounds like you and your little ones are going to reel him in with cuteness... 🤣

What other breeds do you have?

This little roo is just so sweet and cuddly! He comes over softly peeps, grooms himself, and likes to take little naps in my arms/lap. I hope he stays sweet and doesn’t get aggressive when he hits puberty, I’ve been reading that some folks say not to handle them too much when they’re little and others keep it up everyday so they are used to be handled. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated!
He’s also much more chill and quieter than the other chicks his age (the girls are pretty chatty and always racing around). When should I expect him to start crowing?
I tend to not handle the boys a lot. After puberty, if I want the boys to be friends, that's a better time to work on them. They are through the confusion of wacky hormones, and finally clear headed, so befriending them after puberty works better for me. I also eat any boy who shows aggressive tendency, I have a lot of males to choose from, and aggression can be an inheritable trait.
