International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

No but that line of BCM are showing a lot of recessive white. Im thinking the light gray under fluff is related to the recessive white, correct? His father had it and Im doing my best to cull hard any birds showing recessive white. Its a danged if u do, danged if u dont kind of thing. The cockerel so far that doesnt show recessive white (yet) has a high tail. The other cockerel with a good tail will more than likely show recessive white. He reminds me a lot of the original cock bird when he was that age. I will breed for type and tail set first, then worry about the rest later. One thing at a time. :)

you are mixing the parasitic white with a recessive white .
they are totally different genes .not related at all by any mean .

the one your flock are showing is a parasitic white not a recessive white .

Parasitic white is not a single gene but a group of accumulated left over from genes crossing and splitting ,can be caused as well by health and living condition .

Recessive white is actually a gene . Symbol ( i ) or I+ .we need to copies of i/i to make a white chooks .

I agree with you breeding for the body type and dark egg come first

unfortunately all 3 of my cockerels have s-shaped combs. I am rehoming them and luna is not in my marans breeding program any more (for s-shaped comb). she will go to my tailed araucana boy for olive eggers. I am praying that the girls will not develop s shaped combs. 5 of them are not luna's daughters, but 2 out of 5 are black. I am not sure if there is a hope they get copper later as they are about 10 weeks old.

no breeder get a 100% pullets with a coppery hackle .or 100% lay dark egg .
if 50% of the progeny is colorful then they parent stock are considered body color breeding pair .
we can breed back the pullets if they have a great type and dark egg to they sire to add color to them .
when we breed we have to be patient and great observer ,
we try to conserve as many good trait possible and correcting the fault without damaging the good stuff of dismiss it .

Here is my next oldest cockerel. His tail and type looks good for now. Eye color is good. However, he has light grey under fluff and a slight halo. He also has some middle toe feathering and heavier feathered thighs/legs than I would like but that's not a huge deal. Easy fix as Chooksman says. :) I don't like the light under fluff though..

Still hoping there are better cockerels outside.. the rest still have a lot of growing to do.

*PS in the second pic (side angle) there is a blue copper pullet laying on the ground behind him.*

sorry to say this .
he is not a keeper ,he ll throw you right back in your breeding .you have better ones .

I do not like his leg at all .too close to each other and not straight
Vulture hook
too narrow from the rear plus the fluff is too light should be black or dark grey NOT light grey . that ll promote the white fluff later .

I do like his tail

if you still decided to keep him and use him ,than mate him to a pure black hen with a solid mass and great type .

Hello everyone!! Long time no see. Summer time is a very busy time for us, especially now with my new job. Fortunately I have been offered a position at a local hospital in their PCU. Looking forward to it very much!

Anyhoo.. Cooper my LA cockerel was killed by my son's dog (the dog is no longer with us) so I am looking through his offspring for his replacement for my LA line of BCM. Mud my FRF cock bird is still fat and sassy as ever. :D. Although the molt is near and he looks like he has seen better days! :lau

Here is my best cockerel from Cooper so far. No parasitic white (yet) and a very nice looking guy aside from his high set tail. I also included a picture of him as a chick. Born Dec 2016.View attachment 1077981 View attachment 1077980

this one is god .one fault that all ,can be corrected without damaging the other good trait .
I do like his rich copper ,his straight and wide apart legs love his head and happy face .
gorgeous eyes

if mated to his aunt like you planed and hatch 20/25 chicks from them ,then you problem will be sorted .
I see only good thing coming out of this mating

Thank you for correcting me! I knew better than that, I swear! lol I have been so exhausted I think my brain has just pooped out. Recessive white is the genes responsible for throwing white sports in a line. I have been reading so much on Cream Legbars, and have read that Jill Rees' line here in the US has been throwing white sports as a result of recessive white genes. That must be where it came from.. it's no telling what I might say with so much rattling around inside my head.

they are nice pullet .
I like the last one in the photos .the dark blue one .stunning .
she will make a nice pair with your gorgeous Copper son .

chooks man

Thank you! I like the dark pullet best also out of my blue coppers. I just hope she lays a nice egg.

I'm so glad you think so! I have adored this cockerel from the start. He just stood out and was so much nicer looking than any of the others.
Then that tail kept creeping higher and higher as he got older..:barnie

Despite his high tail, I think he is a lovely cockerel. I will single mate him to his aunt and *hopefully* hatch some decent tailed cockerels for next year. :fl

I may go ahead and catch the hen, newly banded #60, and get her cleaned out. I could get an early start on hatching a few from them.

Pardon the rough shape of her feathers. The young cockerels are relentless in their pursuits.

I will have to agree with you. I have never really liked this cockerel very much. Since this line of BCM does carry vulture hocks, I admit I was concerned about his heavily feathered legs/thighs and him probably carrying the VH gene. I would use him if I didn't have a choice but the legs, coupled with the light under fluff makes him a cull. We nearly processed him a few weeks ago when we did some of the others, but he was younger and smaller so we decided to let him grow a bit more. He will be going to freezer camp.

Snapped a few pics of some of this years pullets that would stand still when I got home today.

This BCM pullet (next 2 pictures) is daughter of Mud x LA hens so she is a blend of Bev Davis, Little Peddler, and Greenfire Farm. There are about 4 of these pullets that look good. The cockerels from this mating all look to be culls.

This next pullet is from my LA line (Cooper X LA pullets). I only ended up with 2 of them, this one and a darker one with very little copper in her hackles.
