International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Chooks Man - Here are some more pics of Pullet #1. She had correct hatch down and green Eyes at hatch. She is from Otis BCM and Thelma Lou BLCM. I took these pics when it was raining so they are a little dark.

Pic from the rear - I like her leg size / spacing and closed tail.

Pic from her left (she's in mid-stride)

Pic from right side - She is a darker blue but well uniformed with good lacing. There is not much I don't like about this girl - her tail is a little longer than I prefer but the angle / set / shape is a marked improvement over her Dam's high / fanned tail.

Let me know if I'm missing anything in my evaluation.

Thanks,
Keith

you have not missed any thing my friend .
she is class too .
what not to like about her ,every thing is great .need more expressed hackle marking that all .
you are not far away to work with great chooks .

Otis is good . great pairing

both of your Roosters shown and proven they are Sire of dams .

let see maybe when you mate them to they female daughters ,they ll throw some nice cockerels

or they to do later Otis over Briscoe daughters and other way around to see maybe the genes will recombine differently .

we have to keep trying tell we find the best pairing .

well happy for you

Chooks Man - Here are better pics of Pullet #2. She is also from Otis BCM and Thelma Lou BLCM.

Pic from the front - this girl is wide and broad. I like her leg size / spacing and she has a small wrinkle at the front of her comb.

Pic from left side - I like her long back, type, size and head. Her tail baffles me - sometimes her tail is thin / pointed and other times it's fanned but overall their is some improvement over her Dam's high / fanned tail.

She has the best copper hackles of all my Spring pullets but the color could be more dense.

Let me know what you see for this girl.

Thanks,
Keith

wow she is wide /short and chunky . great
I prefer the dark under fluff of this one . P#1 has a lighter fluff .
both have a nicer blue well laced .

there is couple white feathers on her shanks or a just a flash of some thing .
if they are white and she hatched with a correct hatch down than they are going to molt out .

her eyes look to me a little darker .
her tail is not a bad . she carries both genes .

white under fluff . can you check if it is just around the wings area or all over ?
100% has to be mated back to a BCM rooster not a BLCM .
darker the under fluff of the Rooster is better .
love her Blue .gorgeous lacing

Thank you, I hope they turn out good. What I also like about the Black Copper is no parasitic white. That has been a problem. I am also trying to breed that out. If he turns out useable I have a couple girls to put with him. I like the BLCM in the front best also. I don't like his comb though but that can be worked on.

very good point .
breeding out the parasitic white is a nightmare .

what a wrong with a BLCM cockerel comb ?

I didn't take anymore pictures but I've been watching him close. You were right about his legs, they're just way to close together. He's been moved to the butcher pen. I'll be keeping the other one to breed. I do have 1 more young cockerel growing out but he's still too young to tell how he'll look.

good move .
you don t want that .
chooks with that sort of legs don t last long especially with a high roost .

always keep your eyes on the legs .they have to be straight and well spaced . very very important .
good legs are foundation for a great body .not just a size .

Thanks Chooks Man! I'm well pleased with the pullets from this Spring. I have 2 more BLCM Pullets from Briscoe x Charlene that are similar in type to the pullets I have shown on this forum except their Blue is washed out. If these lighter pullets lay good dark eggs then I may use them in a breeding program with a BCM.

Here is my plan:

1) Swap Spring Breeding Combinations: Breed Otis to Charlene and Ellie May then breed Briscoe to Thelma Lou to see how their genes work together. If it doesn't work out then I'll make soup. Who knows, maybe switching them up will give me better cockerels.

2) Breed the Sires to their daughters after their first adult molt.

Thanks Again,
Chooks

Sometimes the fluff looks white and other times grey depending on the light. My plan is to mate the BLCM Pullets to their Sires.

Thanks,
Keith
