International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here is Apollo and #60's first chick. A big plump chick, but it has a lot of white. It is still a little cutie. I love how hefty Marans chicks are.

There were also 3 cream legbar chicks hatched when I checked the incubator.. all cockerels. My luck has not been the best today. Long story..

Just realized one of my cockerels has a 'deformed' wattle.
Will this affect anything but his looks? Will it pass onto his progeny?
Here it is at 11 weeks, it's much more pronounced now @14 weeks,
about 1/3 of the size of the other.

Don't think I posted him before, but am now considering keeping him instead of one of the blues posted previously.

Will get better pics of all 3 tomorrow, I hope.

At least with the CLB you know their fate right away!

I am always amazed when I pick up a Marans chick, they are substantial!

We raised a smaller amount this year only about 80 chicks and they are hatched later this year. Might hatch a few in the fall.

80 chicks sound like a music to my ears .
I like the large numbers better and broader progeny to select from .
how many breeding hens are you working with Snowbird ?
love to see some photos of your stock one day .

I manage to hatch 120 BCM chicks from a Zambezi ( BCM Rooster from the import stock UK )and his 6 BCM hens plus another 45 from Djabel ( import stock as well ) over a BLCM hens .
a lot to select from and a lot variation .well pleased .

I m afraid to say he is a cull .
any physical deformation is not good for breeding .he ll pass down to his progeny .

We used five hens from Ernie Haire down in Texas. Will post some youngsters soon as they mature a little more. We didn't hatch anything early because of the cold weather here

Im hoping I get a few chicks with better hatch down from them. It was a little disappointing seeing this chick with so much white, but that is something I have been culling for in this line. I think I am going to wing band chicks straight out of the incubator and record their down color for reference later.

Yep. But hopefully I can find them homes instead of the alternative. I may grow a few out. They are cute little buggers with the poofs on their heads already. Lol
