International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Maybe so...we know the Rooster plays a big part in the dark egg genes so maybe he also passes on genes for shape and sheen. However it happens I’ll take it.

I can’t wait to see what comes out of that egg with Wilson on it!

Lol I know right!! That is going to be a really special chick! I use golfballs as nest eggs and I brought those in the house for some reason or another and put them in the turner so I could find them easily!

Happy Valentine's day Everyone! Brother and sisterly love to all my Marans friends! I candled my eggs yesterday day 10. So far so good on my Marans eggs. I can't wait for babies.

It was in the 70's here today and very nice out! Winter is very bizarre in KY. One week it could be warm and mild, the next week it could be bitter cold with snow and ice.

Anyway, I took some pictures of a few more cockerels that would stand still and pose.

This is the cockerel with the growth-like bump on his beak near his nostrils. He is another son from Apollo and Sheraz (formerly known as "#60"). He is looking very good in shape and color. He is rectangular in shape and has decent tail angle for now if it doesnt get any higher. Sheraz blessed most of her sons with her long, flat back.

Pardon the clutter in the last pic. My son makes it nearly impossible to keep my yard picked up. He is always into everything and leaves stuff laying around.

Here is another cockerel from Apollo and Sheraz. His tail is too high but he is a very chunky cockerel. His crop is full from feeding time in the pic.

As I have mentioned, all of my males that are turning cocks this spring have white underfluff, including Gideon my Line B (FRF) cockerel. My line A males are the worst, including most of the current grow outs who are already showing white underfluff. Luckily I have come up with a game plan, a nice dark overly melanized cockerel from a different line completely with dark underfluff to hopefully help me correct the parasitic white. I will keep this crossing marked separate as its own line.

This cockerel is 4.5 months old. He has beautiful type so far and I adore his tail! His comb isnt good, but that is at the back of my mind for now with him and can be worked on later. He is a shy fellow and isnt as tame as my other boys but I managed to get a few decent pictures of him.

He is the first I have ever had with it. I don't think its genetic from talking to several people about it. Like you said, it was likely caused by minor trauma to the beak/nostrils in the area and caused it to form a callous like bump. He gets to stay.

I vote Felton's Feathered Fancies with rooster.

I find word poultry too common. I think it is suitable for hatcheries, not for special breeds. it is just my opinion.

you have to put your spin on it .so ll be always related to your work .
you are a marans a breeders and future shower . plus you are doing all this hard work to fix the BCM variety .I think you need to incorporate this effort to your Logo .
personal opinion = Felton 's Feathered Marans or Felton 's Fancies Marans .( 2FM plus your rooster drawing as a Logo )

that mean you selected well your breeders .
when we breed a good pair of chooks and we get it alright . we produce a superior progeny than they parent stock .
if we get wrong than the progeny will be inferior .

in your case the progeny is superior than the parent stock . great move .

this sort of work we call it selective breeding . enhancing the existing trait and breeding out the faults .

My breeder cockerels Apollo and Maximus both have white under their hackles! The parasitic white plagues my beloved Marans and haunts my dreams!

Oh the horror!

don t panic . there is solution to any problem . most of BCM/BLCM /BRM strain suffer from the hackle white under fluff . this parasitic white fluff is different than the featheres parasitic white . genetically are different and they are regulated by different genes .

Don t forget .as BCM breeders we are working against the low of nature. the SOP don t select for the genetically sound and correct color pattern .they select for they test . that some time causes problem for the breeders .
the SOP call for a rich red copper / orange eyes/ slate with a pinkish tune shanks. those thing come at the cost . selecting for those traits generation after generation reduced the amount and the type of the Melanin in the chooks genomes .We almost bred the melanin out . bad move .
you can t fix every thing in one line in one go .need time and many lines .
it is going to take as a long time and effort to fix and breed those chooks to they full potential .

what you need is a just one cockerel with a pure Black under fluff . over Melinised bird.
if you find this bird ,breed from him in a limited number .because you don t want to go back to a black chooks .

I think we all should breed a white variety .every thing is white ( even here the SOP allow the white marans rooster to have some degree of yellow on his hackle and saddle-)

breeding to the SOP doesn t mean breeding genetically correct and sound chooks.
