International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

sorry for your loss.

I don't know what predators I will have in the future as I am going to move to the place near the agricultural fields and woods. foxes and weasels (martens) for sure.

I want to keep chickens on soil so I am thinking hard how to protect them from outside.

when you get new place I ll help you design your predator free pen and run

congrats!:love

burbon red are on my wish list. I am going to keep them together with peafowl. I already got a pair of peafowl but they stay in athens at my friends (as well as a trio of geese) as I don't have room.

love the burbon red turkey .
getting them this coming spring .
Geese have a plenty of them .good to keep the grass well low to the ground . they need a lot of grass

Thanks! I hated to lose them, they were good hens. Very productive girls. But at least nothing got any of our breeder birds.

Weasles are the worst and are hard to trap or kill. We have had minks kill chickens before and it they kill for sport a lot of times so they will kill and just leave the chickens laying. Get you a good LGD and you shouldnt have any problems. We normally dont aside from hawks picking off young birds, but while the dogs are away the varmints will play.

thank you very much.

I have already chosen land I am going to buy. it is roughly 73 m x 120 m. road is along a 73 meters side, west. I plan to put a house about 20 meters from the west and south side. so, about 40 meters from the road I plan to put chickens. if you can give me advise how to make their coops I will be more than happy. the predators are active at night only. I will use some lights for predators from above and dogs that will be able to run around the property but not in the chicken runs.

I will probably use sandwich panels and wire mesh. it is easier to protect them from foxes but there are weasles/martens in the area.

I heard terriers kill weasels. I already have 2 mixed breed terriers but they are old. they have been killing rats and mice for years and they don't pay any attention to the chickens.

I am considering german shepherds as besides foxes there are human varmints too.

Just remember a weasel can go through a one inch hole and can wipe out a flock. We went with hardware cloth. More expensive but worth it to me to keep everyone safe.
