International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Claude is breathing heavy. Very loud breathing. When Bello chases him around the yard, when he is after a hen, he breathes very heavy with exertion but otherwise has no problems. He looks and acts like he feels fine. Very hot and humid here. Could it just be the weather?

I think that is the trouble for a lot of us. We are trying to get good BCM's and we are buying them. They are expensive to say the least and they are rare. We don't see a lot of them and we don't have a lot of experience so we hang on to what we get. We never end up with something worth reproducing. Then we have to get rid of them, we are discouraged and still have not seen a good BCM. I went thru several batches to get the ones I have. I guess it is not fair for me to say "a lot of us".... but this is my experience.

look RedBank there is two way to breed chooks ;

1) Bad breeding practice . most of us apply it.

2) good breeding practice.

there not a good chooks and bad chooks .

there is a good chooks breeders ( and they product ) and bad chooks breeders ( and they product )

that why the one s who practice the first one ( most of us) want to start with a good chooks . because we can t make them .they are only going to destroy them.

BUT the one they practice the second method ( good breeding practice ) they don t main starting with some thing just ok ,because they know they are going to work it and fix what wrong.

We don t need a 100 good chooks to start breeding But we need one pair of chooks and a good planing plus hatching as many as we can .

that is a secret in genetic .QUANTITY , genetic like numbers

Sorry I have been so inactive guys.

I need to pick up the slack and give my self time to read and reflect on this thread daily or every other day.

When I don't keep up I lack interesting things to add haha, I am needing to sell off many of my other birds... but it feels like pulling teeth lol.

I have recently taken a liking to the wheaton and black tailed buff marans. I must have some in the future when my pens get expanded haha.

On the plus side one of my marans pullets laid her first egg! I will post a picture soon. It is a lovely egg, and a very nice sized one for a pullet.

Glad to hear from you! Those Cuckoos of mine lay Jumbo eggs, every one I have cracked open is a double yolker. I don't understand it. There are a lot of pretty varieties of Marans.

Post pictures!

the type of comb come from the mother hen. she have more to do with it than a rooster.

How we fix this problem ?

if we have a rooster with so many quality but with a bad comb than we have to work with and fix the problem .

we have to find a hen with a great comb even if she is not good in other thing ( except the mossyness . i never breed from a mossy hens ) we mate her to the Rooster we selected and we hatch some F1 chicks ( a lot of them will have a nice comb).

we select pullets from this F1 progeny with a good combs and mate them back to they sire F0 ( Rooster with a bad comb and other good qualities ) = we get the F2 progeny .a lot of them will have a nice comb and other good quality from they father.

we chose a cockerel from this F2 progeny with a good comb and other quality of his father and mate him to his dam/ants and produce F3 most of them will have a great comb and the qualities we kept from they sire.

Et Voila .

Chooks man, We have been told repeatedly that if a cockerel has a sprig to get rid of him. So you are telling us we can breed it out of the line. We are quick to throw away our birds because we have been told they are not any good. I think what you are telling us is "No bad chooks..... just bad breeders".
