Sometimes from a distance I can't tell Claude from Antonio.

I had that trouble once posting pictures. I just can't remember how I fixed it or what was wrong. I think it was a BYC problem but that doesn't seem to be the case for you.

Congrats on the hatch!

Hey everyone. Not sure if uploading on the app will work. Thanks to everyone sharing your great pics. Right now I have 3 black copper roosters with my "adult" flock. Plan to process the third one thanks to help here to those that assisted me in picking my top two.

From another group... I have one male that I kept with the younger girls... But they aren't young anymore and they don't need his protection whilst free ranging anymore. He's a great guy and unlike my other roos that grew up with other males in the group he didn't have that (thanks to a hawk taking out the other 3 males in his hatch group). I wonder if growing up as the only male is the reason he seems more protective of his girls.

Can't decide what to do with him yet. He's still to0 little to be worth processing... Idk if his "type" is decent enough to feel okay to pass him on to another bcm flock in my area. Or if due to his faults I would be more productive for the breed as a whole to just, 'off' him? Sorry if that offends anyone. If I kept him I'd have to rotate out one of my other favorites, both of which I'm keen on. However I paid a lot for the eggs and the man I bought from has won APA stuff repeatedly for his males. Eh either way I figure pictures from all ends of the spectrum are good for conversation and learning!, here he is

His fault is some white on his tail tips!. I've never seen this! Usually it's on the last wing feather I'll see it... Or on the foot feathering. All the females I got from this man were super super consistent looking so I was impressed with him for that

Another fault if I was being picky, he seems to have a bit of, idk what you would call it- flame ish? around his neck. Then again, my other roos seem too-mahogany to me at times.

Oh and on another note. I've decided I'm not going to breed the hen I have with the odd eye color. I will keep her for eggs until I hatch more hens then give her away. A pic of her eye fault

Congrats on your chicks Chooks Man! Hope you figure out the problem with BYC so you can post pics. I can't post pics using the BYC App on my iPad but I can if I use the website on my computer. Keith

He is still young and doesn't have his mature feathers yet. Once he molts out of his juvenile plumage, the white should disappear. Right now he's still a baby and a few white feathers is common in juveniles. Hopefully those white feathers will all molt out.

10 days is good.
for me when I swap the roosters I still hatch the eggs been lay in the next 10 days but I tagged them differently

That's what we've always figured, but I wanted to be sure. We normally clean hens out for two weeks but I think I will go ahead and start collecting some LA eggs for the incubator. It's been nearly two weeks. They took a short break while we had snow, but have started back up again. One of my splash hens with Mud (FRF BCM cockerel) is laying also so I'm going to start saving those eggs as well.

Also, we had a pretty windy day yesterday and I noticed something on Cooper (LA BCM cockerel) that concerned me. When the wind blew his hackle I noticed he has some white fluff under his hackle feathers. He is going on 8 months old. Maybe it's still possible it will molt out? How difficult is it to breed parasitic white feathers out of a line?

He has also suffered frost bite to all of the points on his comb. My poor Cooper.. I really don't want to trim him like a Gamecock. I may just trim the necrotic areas and leave the rest. Or let the frost bitten points fall of naturally as long as it doesn't start making him sick. I only need him for this year anyway. Hopefully he will produce some decent looking progeny with no white. I will choose a couple of his best sons to replace him.

Baunlee,

A chicken's coloring can change with the juvenile molt (age 4 months) and first adult molt (16-18 months). From the pics he looks like a decent young Cockerel - he's just young and still needs to grow out to see his full potential. With that said, your personal situation is your own so if to your eye he is not as good as your older Cockerels then the decision makes itself. I have limited coop space so I myself have had to make those tough choices...never easy but necessary.

Depending on how he turns out after his adult molt he may be good enough for someone else's BCM Flock - only time will tell. However, if you are concerned about perpetuating undesirable genes in the BCM gene pool then you could advertise him for sale or free as a generic brown egg layer breed suitable for someone that wants to breed Olive Eggers. My local feed store will re-home unwanted or excess chickens so you may check with your feed store to see if that is an option for you. Then again I'm not opposed to a nice pot of chicken and dumplings. I get culling chickens for personal consumption is not for everyone but whatever our choice we must be responsible stewards of the breed as well as for our home flocks. You'll make the right decision for you and your flock.

Best,
Keith

he is a breeder not a show bird ,so you can chop his comb if you think is better for him . well been of the animal is better than they look to help your chicken with a cold weather ( you guys seem to have a lot of it ) give them sun flower seed . 20/3 g / chooks . I ll give mine a Breeder pullet soaked in warm water plus some milk too . they have it first thing in the morning to worm them up . marans chooks are really good winter layer if they get the right feed . good luck with your incubation plans .all the best . chooks man PS .yesterday 41.3 D C plus 18% humidity . I spent all the day hosing they run to keep then cool .that almost 1 acre of land . very hard for the chooks .they are fine . they love the most ground . all good .
