My handsome young boy Jean-Luc woke up with some kind of respiratory illness yesterday morning & by 8:00 pm he died!! What acts that fast??!! Crazy. Now I'm stuck with his brother who isn't nearly as good looking. His shanks are sparsely feathered and his feathering isn't nearly as good. They came from the same breeder. I'll try to get more pics when I get back home in a few days

Hey guys! It's been quite some time since I've been on. I still currently only have 2 Black Copper Marans. I had a Blue Copper Cockerel but had to get rid of him due to an attack on my son. Hatched out another from the original breeder my pullet came from, Lady Olivia. She's 11 months old now and in the video. The cockerel I have for her is about 6 months old now and I'd like some feedback. I took a lot of photos but just gave up and decided to upload a video.
Here's what I see:
Faults-
Too many comb points
Comb texture
High tail
A bit brassy in the hackle
Needs more copper color..? still young yet though
Not as good of a brick shape as my blue I had
Strengths-
Good shank feathering
Decent shank coloring pink/white with gray
Eye coloring
That's all I got. If I'm wrong about something, someone feel free to chime in and state what you think. I'm allearseyes!
Also, Lady Olivia is featured in the video as well. Turns out she has developed some white tipped feathers around her face. I don't know what to make of it. I don't recall any damage or any illness to her, so she may not be as good as I hoped. But these two are all I've got. Hoping together they will make some beautiful babies, or a least a few keepers.
Please note, you should be able to view in HD, just click on the settings on the video

I agree with you that his comb is not great but the comb is inherited from the hen. He does not appear to have a high tail at all to me (45 degree angle is SOP). Tail also appears to be correct size - short and full.
IMO, he has really nice copper hackles & saddle feathers and good eye color (I like the eyes to be more orange-red color). He's showing decent red shoulders (upper wing) but I would prefer the red to be more full and uniformed. I also like his type, leg size (medium and well spaced) and shank color / feathering.
What color are his ear tufts? In one pic they appear dark colored and another copper colored (we prefer copper colored). He also appears to be black breasted. Breed him to a well-colored hen (good copper hackles) and you should do fine.
As for the white tipped feathers on Lady Olivia's face - check to make sure it's not lice eggs. I had a cockerel that had a similar occurrence and it turned out to be lice.
Take Care,
Keith
the video worked for me.Thank you Keith for the feedback.
Glad to hear that you think his tail is correct. It's higher than what my other cockerels was, maybe his was a bit low. Hopefully it will stay short and full but he's still got more growing to do.
His coloring l am pleased with the color of the copper on his body, he just needs more of it, and like I said, there's still time.
His ear tufts are hard to decide on color wise. My other cockerel had black ear tufts. Upon close inspection it appears he has some copper tuft feathers lining the outer edge of his tufts with the middle a dark gray. I'm pleased with that as I understand copper tufts means he's got a lot of copper color genetics. I'm glad he's not over colored as my hen has great copper herself and I would hate the pairing to make a bunch of over colored birds. He's also got 2 copper feathers on his breast near his hackle, I think that's a good sign as well?
I will definitely check Lady Olivia when I get home. I took a brief look at their vents a couple of days ago looking for signs of pests and found none, but they could use a more thorough looking over. I suspect it's not lice eggs on her head, though if it is, that's a problem that could be solved. If it does happen to be white tipped feathers, what does that mean? Would she be DQd at show? Is it inheritable? I plan on breeding her as 1) she's the only one I got 2)everything else about her is spectacular. If you look in the pic with her pecking the ground, it appears her carriage feathers are brown! I noticed that yesterday with the naked eye as well. Is that a concern?
Curious, were you able to view the video yesterday? Looking at my post it appears the video link is broken, is it viewable on your end?
Thanks again!
