Antonio and 9 hens is good .I think you left your self short on roosters .let see how this little one will do .

let them molt and rest .

Marans chooks are not a heavy layers so they don t need the layer feed because is formulated for the layer .high calcium and low is vitamin s need to help the embryo to form .
Breeder feed is formulated to meet the need of the hen and the embryo .

I always laugh when I read about layers feed, breeders feed, etc. what we have hear is a bulk of powder which probably is at least 95% corn. that's why I feed whole grains to my chickens and must feed eggs besides the commercial feed to the young ones. people who feed the commercial feed only get sick chicks and have losses. I guess crises is killing everything here.

can you post the analysis of the breeders feed?

I am glad I didn't cull an s-shaped comb cockerel. his comb is getting straight in front although it is still bent. might be a sort of injury (thorn) as it is thick and hard at the base at the back side. it looks a bit softer than before.

the other 2 got s-shape combs. I am waiting for them to grow a bit more before taking pics. it is incredible how they change. they are about 13-14 weeks old.

here in Australia we don t have any crises .all good .

Breeders feed ingredients ( the one I use - Showbird breeder MP .) Australian product . this feed come in a small size pellet ( micro pellet)

I give my breeders 70% of they ration Breeders feed and 30 % grain ( in the summer germinated wheat and barley . in the winter black sun flower seed )

my layer pen has 30 hens and they eat 3kg of pellet ( Breders feed ) and 1kg sun flower seed a day .

in the breeding season I give them vitamin B12 complex in they drinking water as well and some . Apple cider Vg and Cod liver oil .

they reward me with healthy chicks ,fast grower.

chooks man, I wholeheartedly appreciate your assessment of Zorro, and the time you took to compose all of the details. I have written everything down, and will try to learn from what you have taught me. I understand it takes years of hard work breeding and culling to come up with chooks that represent the proper character you want in a BCM. I am looking forward to working with them, and I hope that I can learn enough to breed chooks that will represent this particular breed well. Thank you again for the time you took to explain everything and what to look for/breed for.

be passion .let them do more growing tell they are 5/6 months old .they change evrey weeks you know that .

I m keeping 100 cockerels in the farm right now from 5 tell 7,5 months old . haven t selected the final yet .
I only keep half of them the other half into the cooking pot .

he is good in every thing except the color .
hell produced black progeny if not mated to proper hen .well colored with extra copper on her chest and coppery ears tufts .

great comb . I ll bred him just for that to be honest to you . this sort of comb you don t see them every day .
nice body type ,he still young . the chest area need to put more weight .
love his long back and tail angle
nice feet ,straight ,well colored and feathered .

do no use him over a black hen/hens because he is licking the Autossomal red he ar/ar rather than Ar/Ar.

@Chooks man, I hope I am not asking you a question that someone else has already asked. Here is my question. When do you put your pullets with a rooster for the first time? At what age or time of year? Thank you in advance. I am trying to go back and read everything you have shared

This is Zorro's father. I was wrong about him being Green Fire Farms. He is from Bev Davis/Gene Wade lines. I was wondering your thoughts. I will share mine.
Pro's
He appears to be broad in the front
His legs look fairly straight
He looks to have a short stature, not to tall (my opinion) I have not mastered this yet
He has a fairly short but I don't know if thin enough at the top
Appears to have good leg color feathering seems ok
It is hard to comment on his back because he seems hunched down

Cons
Some straw coloring in hackle
Can't tell much about flame
Can't see eye color or ear lobe color
The comb looks to be to large, to many points, and it flops
Wattle look to large and are not pretty
Not holding wing tight to his body
Does not appear to have any color on his chest
I still have much to learn

you have a very nice BCM pullets ,especially the 2 with a coppery hackle .
they have a type and the body marking too .let see what color egg this girls are going to lay ?
I ll bred from them any way ,they have so much going for them .

my pullets goes with a cockerels as soon as they reach 5 month . 15 pullets to a cockerel , not for breeding just to keep them happy and get used to be with each other .

I ll bred my pullet at a year old or if they are big I wait tell they eggs reach 65g .
