International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I was just out in the yard and decided to take a few pics of Antonio. When I came here to post them I had to smile, so many people posting pictures. I love the pictures. We do have some beautiful Marans on this thread. I didn't follow any of the rules, it was just too hot. Antonio is still a mess with feathers sticking out and missing.

he has a pretty face
gorgeous eyes
correct comb nice point well spaced and well define .
good size wattle .nice shape and texture red and free from any folding
lovely ears lobe thin long and red
well colored beak strong and short

if you manage to get out of him few pullets with that sort of head and comb ,I think they ll be hard to beat .
find him a well colored hens . even with extra on her chest . that will help

chooks man
Thank you chooks man for all of your advice. He does have a pretty face. I have one pullet with decent color. I will breed him to her when she is old enough. We will see what the progeny looks like. I love my LP pullets type, but they are not that great on an abundance of hackle color.

he is the best on body color because his mama was splash ( some time is hard to breed from the splash because we can not see they true body marking )
but his head is stunning . I ll breed from him just for that

BREEDING IS NOT JUST ABOUT BODY COLOR there is many many other important trait ,some are easy to fix other are harder .

keep him separate and give him more protein in his ration to promote the feathers growth .and he ll love you for it .meal worm or some thing like. that will help him and he ll become your best friend .

chooks man
I will feed him extra protein. He seems to be feeling a little better today. I will keep that in mind about the splash.

Trust me, he looks a 100% better than Mud. Poor old Mud is still molting and looks rough. Antonio is a gorgeous cock bird! Hope his little chick grows up to look just like him.

if they lay dark eggs than is all different story .
every thing could be fixed . don t dismiss them because of they body type and high tail .
EGG COLOR COME FIRST
body type second
body color marking third
comb and eyes
free from parasitic white
feathered shanks last thing .easiest thing to fix

chooks man

That is very true! Egg color does come first. How dare I forget that. lol If those pullets lay as dark or darker than their dam, I will definitely be breeding them then. :)

I am going to let everybody grow out quite a bit more before I make any decisions on who to pen up for breeding. I will rotate different pairings of birds in the breeding pens and raise chicks from multiple single matings, and I will mark each mating differently so I will know what pair threw which chicks. I need to get my husband busy building me a few more pens.
