Bravo
chooks man

Hahahaha!! That's too funny!

I have question on a 3 1/2 month old cockerel He's beautiful in his design, structure and coloring is really coming in well. His fault is white lobes. I know this is a major fault. My question is, could he be used as a breeder in a limited role and how strongly will he throw this trait? Will his progeny all have this as a recessive even tho they don't have them? TIA

Chooks man has advised us to avoid breeding a male with white ear lobes. He will pass the trait on to his progeny. You want solid red ear lobes, especially on your male breeder. One or two of my original hens has white ear lobes and they havent produced any white ear lobed offspring that I can see so far. But the original cock birds both had red ear lobes. @Chooks man will have more info for u. :)

I have to clear this point . it is not much know about it . earlobe color .
the gene /genes responsible for it are not know to us . they do not exist in any chooks genes map. no any chicken chicken calculator ( as far as I know ) has them in they genes table .
what we know come to us from a small study done by a small group of researcher , and they did go as far as producing the F2 generation .
what they did find out was interesting ,because the cross they made between the white earlobe and the red earlobe did not produce the same result in the F1 generation , a lot variation .
the same thing happen when they produced the F2 generation .a lot variation .
so the conclusion was ;
White earlobe and Red earlobe are not caused by a single gene , must be a group of genes in play .
there is not Dominance between this two ( White earlobe /Red earlobe ) , what they find out is .the modern chooks are divided to 4 different classes .
1) White earlobe .
2) Red earlobe
3) Mostly white ( predominantly white)
4) Mostly red ( predominantly Red )

the study shown as well there is some sex linked relation in there ,but not fully understood . a lot of Autossome genes involved .

So we have to know how much white is in our chooks earlobe?
White .mostly white.Red . mostly red .

if they are mostly red ,than they are easy to breed out . we have to cross them to a pure red earlobe strain or line to fix that .cockerel or pullets ,sex linked genes influence is very small .

if they are white or mostly white ,than they are a cull . never come out of it .

I sound terrible .like a made scientist .
i like comment and see photos of a marans chooks .BUT we have to learn the secret of the tread .

chooks man

PS I ll post my own study with photos in this subject , need more time .

Great stuff here! He has a mix of red and white and some days they look red. i will post pics here when i can get around to it.

Like I said, he appears to be a very nice bird in terms of color and comformation, although he is still not fully plumed. Thanks @Chooks man !

sound to me like he is mostly red . workable .
post photos of his and the hens/pullets( pullets older than 6 month old so we can they earlobe ) you want to mate him with .

in this case the hens/pullets has to be pure Red . other wise does not work .

Will do. All others have red. He’s out of a completely different genetic base tho.

Here are few pics. The lighting is bad. Very cloudy here so not much light in the coop.

sorry to say this .but this cockerel is going to cause you so much trouble down the line .it is better not to use him .
he does carry few major fault ,hard to correct latter .
1) white earlobe
2) extra melanin ( too much black on him) his beak /ears tuft /dark shank / marble colored eyes . all this fault are not good on the cockerel .the hen is different story .
3) he has not enough color on his saddle / lancet and the shoulders .plus his copper is darker ( Mahogany type) because of the extra melanin he is carrying

if he had just one major fault than will be alright to work with ,but not will all those3 together .most of his progeny will be a cull . sorry to say that .

we ll try to find you some fertile eggs from people on this thread .or a cockerel.

he is a good type and has a good comb ,but those thing we can get them from the hen too ,because they are not sex linked .

chooks man

@Chooks man hes only 3 1/2 months and his color is just coming in now. Lots of pin feathers. Any chance he will put more color on. I will get more pics with better lighting

he is big for 3 and half month .long way to go ,
sorry .we need to wait tell he is fully grown 6/9 months old to see his true color .

only need some shoulder and lancet color and he ll be good to go .

waiting for better photos of him ,so I can see what you see .
