International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

By pairing him with Queen, Lucille, and #8 I am breeding in 3 different directions. Maximus is FRF x LA.

Maximus mated to Queen (LA) = 3/4 LA and 1/4 FRF. Hoping for birds with long backs and nice tail angles with good egg color from this pairing.

Maximus mated to Lucille - big blue copper pullet (FRF x Bev Davis) = 3/4 FRF 1/4 Bev Davis 50% black copper, 50% blue copper chicks. What I plan to achieve with this mating is improving the egg color of the blue coppers. Maximus and Lucille share the same sire, Mud - my original FRF cock bird (good egg color).

Maximus mated to #8 (FRF x LA) creates my FRF x LA F2 line which should yield pullets with good egg color I'm hoping while throwing birds with good type and tail angle and nice combs.

Those eggs are amazing! Hang onto the pullets that laid those for dear life and breed them wisely, making sure not to lose those precious genes! Absolutely gorgeous! Well done!

I have a feeling I may have just given the one that lays the real dark eggs away. I had someone come pick up 4 of my older hens and I through in a young pullet that had crooked toes. No dark egg today but hopefully tomorrow. Or are you talking about the ones that laid the eggs in my avatar? Those are the ones I just got rid of. They were laying those last Feb.

I was talking about the eggs you posted a pic of the other day. But the eggs in your avatar are lovely also. Might I ask why you would part with creatures that lay eggs so lovely?

Egg color is the first and foremost important quality to select for. Without the Marans egg color we have nothing more than a pretty chicken dressed like a Marans. My darkest egg layer is the worst Marans hen I have, SOP wise. But I wouldn't take a wad of cash that would choke a mule for her. Those dark egg genes are precious.

I do hope the pullet that laid those dark eggs you have is still there.

classical french type marans hens . long and thick with a super wide rear close to the ground .

this hen is lucking the rear No depth No volume too high from the ground.

this 2 hens type has nothing similar . they are totally different . I don think they belong to the same breed .

Just moved some birds around. Apollo and Zanitta are now in coop together by themselves. He talked sweetly to her when I sit them on the roost next to each other. Apollo is a very gentle cockerel. I moved my extra Marans hens and two Leghorn hens in with my Cream Legbars. My plan is to hatch a few barred Olive Eggers and some Cream Legbar/White Leghorn hybrid pullets (aka Sapphires or super blue egg layers). Just for fun.

With respect to the hens, the tail is broad at the base (sitting naturally well with a full body), but it must be seen to be rather short and fine having tight, not open feathering. Presence of a "Fan tail " is a serious defect.

took me 4 years of selective breeding to achieve this body type .Now i move on to the refinement department ( comb, hackle ,earlobe )

The larger black silhouette drawing came from an American facebook Marans group I am a member of. Drawn by a Marans fancier as their interpretation of the standard. It is said that the artist had trouble getting the tail right. It is a drawing of a female Marans silhouette.

They have absolutely perfect type and tails! They are really amazing.

I think I am going to print off the silhouette of both the male and female drawings and hang them on my refrigerator. I want the images burned into my memory, so I can select for the ideal shape as I look through my birds in the future. I aspire to have birds as lovely as yours.

I think the real confusion here is we are talking about the top of the tail being thin and closed, at least that is the rear view.... but we are only looking at the side view. You can certainly have both of these images in one chicken. From the side the pictures match the correct illustrations, from the back we see the kind of tail we want to see, it is broad at the bottom and matches the hens body, thin and closed at the top. At least this is my understanding.....
