International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@Chooks man

if I breed black copper hen with a true blue (not BBS) araucana cockerel what colours would the chicks be?

another question about colours: my naked neck come from a flock where hens are all black and the majority of the roos look like birchen (silver with kind of golden sheen on silver). if I breed those black hens with a true blue araucana cockerel what do I get?

you ll get Blue and black progeny with some golden leakage .

She is plump indeed. I caught her up and she is in a holding pen now, her sister also. I dont want my Marans girls laying their precious eggs in the weeds. I may pen her with Apollo as he is pure LA also (and her brother) since I know what her eggs look like now and will be able to tell her eggs apart from Zanitta's.

seem it is a good plan .
I always mate full sibling for few generation to let the genes recombine and the Atavistic Recessive genes to express them selves . so I can select wisely not speculatively .

than after I select I out cross them to a similar quality chooks or superior to continue the work forward .

thank you Kfelton .
took me 4 years to get this dude out .
I bred his mama /grand mama and Grand dad from the mother side .
his Grand Sire Black Mamba was imported as fertile eggs in 2013 . Black solid rooster with a bad long tail .
take time to build any line . I m not rushing . have all the time and space I need for my chooks .View attachment 1192227 View attachment 1192228
you see how pretty is his tail and how pure black it is .
I always said we can breed any thing out and breed any thing true .if we put time and effort .
now look at the tail of his grand /grand son Tobambezi s tail correct and no sign of any white .

Very great work! That definitely gives me hope. You have done marvelous with them. :)

Great! Most of my pairings this year are half brother/sister or full brother/sister. I am very anxious to see what next years birds will look like. :)

I cannot believe it! I think I don't appreciate my chickens

I guess I started from the same point as your year 2 or 3. now I cannot wait to continue!

great information. I didn't think of mating full siblings but I will think about that.

last year my only hen luna was mated to her sire and full brother. I cannot know who's the chicks are. would it be problem to breed them in case they are full siblings coming from a full sibling pair? or should I just mate luna and marco and separate the young ones? I have room to do that.

one or 2 generation of full sibling mating doesn t do any harm to the chooks. actually is better for us ,they can genetically express them selves before we start adding to them ( we can not start adding salt in ours food before we taste it ). because our chooks come from an out cross matting . after that is a different story .

there is some peoples out there against this method .they prefer the out cross all the time .
out cross does not bring out the Hidden recessive genes . out crossing is based on dominance .

a secret my friend is to keep breeding ,year in ,year out .and each year fix some thing and try to breed some thing out .
if you do that one day you ll have gorgeous chooks line .faultless ,well bred .not just look good for the show to please the judges .

expect a lot variation because of they come from a out cross lines .
expect as well some chooks will look a like .
the F2 generation is a explosion of the genetic expression of what in there .
larger is the population better is the expression of the phenotype we see .
