International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

sorry to hear that .
I hate this sort of problems .
worm can weaken the chooks .

how she is doing now after you gave her Vermox ? hope she recovered

chooks man

I gave her vermox yesterday. it seems she had too many worms so she was very bad this morning. the vet was no help. I gave her water with kefir, wormwood tea and garlic and gave her massage a few times. about an hour ago she finally pooped a bit and expelled 5-6 worms. they didn't move when she pooped them out so I guess her intestines are blocked by dead worms.

Hi I'm new to BYC, and have a few questions about my BC Marans chicks. I'm not sure if this is the best place for this, or if I should have started a new thread...

But my question is, what color legs are best for Black Copper Marans? I have one Cockerel with slate legs, and other younger chicks with yellow. When I looked on the Marans site, it didn't mention leg color, only feathering and shank color. Should I be breeding for a specific color, or is one more desired over the other for SOP?

Thanks!

Do not breed from the yellow legged ones. Marans should have slate colored legs and white skin, never yellow. Welcome to the group and feel free to ask all the questions you like! :)

Here is a cockerel with appropriate leg color for a Black Copper Marans. Pardon the white in his leg feathers.

how old is the chick with yellow legs? marans shouldn't have yellow but pink legs. black and black copper can have darker (slate) legs.

this year some of my chicks had yellowish legs that turned to pink later. never cull too young chickens as they change a lot.

This may change @Chooks man. The best one is still in the coop. You have 7 to choose from in this batch. Thank you for helping me and your infinite patience.

They are about a week, then more that are only a few days old. They may turn more pink yet.

This year's non breedable culls will go to my "egg production" pen, so I'm not in a hurry to get rid of any yet!

they are too young. I think mine were almost 2 months old when their legs turned pink.

I am glad you will keep your culls. welcome to the club! besides breeders we need layers and broody hens.
