International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I lost one of my Blue Copper roosters today. I think it was Hulk. The one with the light grey under tones. Not sure why? I found no worms or mites. Gizzard was full with some grit inside. Crop had some grain inside. Head was dark and showed no signs of him being sick. I am wondering if he choked. That feed I buy can be like powder if they grind it too fine. :(

sorry for your loss.

a friend of mine lost a young peacock - heart attack - that is what the vet told him. it was a healthy guy who got scared, probably of a cat.

Watch out.. for real. Cats are carnivores and predators. They have a prey drive that is out of this world. Little scurrying baby chicks are sometimes just too hard to resist, to even the most well behaved cats. Ask me how I know this. lol

there is a crazy place where I buy goat's milk. I love when I have to wait for them to milk the goats because I watch their chickens. they live like in the jungle. every single hen that gets broody hatches the chicks and take care of them. they are free and eat what they find. you can see the cats sleeping on the porch and just hatched chicks stepping over them. even broodies ignore the cats. the only problem is that goats and sheeps kill them when step over them. but there are always plenty of chicks.

Thank you so much for your evaluation! I am so glad to hear you think she is going to make a good breeder. I may not crank out many quality breeders this year but if I get a few I'll be happy. :)

you all ready bred few nice chooks as future breeders ,high class quality .

Thank you, I am sad about losing Hulk. He was a nice rooster. I am glad it wasn't my Thor though. I hatched two chicks from Thor last hatch and would like to hatch a few more.

I think I am going to take a break from my Marans and seriously consider throwing in the towel! :( I wish you all the best.

What makes you want to throw in the towel? Nothing worth having comes easy. Hang in there and vent to us when you need to rant. I have had more than my fair share of bad luck with Marans so I know how discouraging and stressful it can be. :(

You nailed the wing banding though I saw! Way to go! :D

Ya know. I come here a little too much but find it fascinating all the things I learn. I see some truly quality birds by all of you and see how you all bounce things off each other and it is inspiring to listen to your travels in this hobby. I see how defeated you all get at times and I think... heck they should see the birds people are selling in my 2 state area as breeder quality. Y'all would make stew without thinking twice! And to top it off a novice like me can pop in and be responded to without being made to feel dumb.

@marchick i know it gets frustrating to see a flaw or have a challenge but look at what you've accomplished. If you want to feel good just go to vermont fanciers Facebook page and look at some of their marans stock. Drives me nuts they sell for $5-$10 a chick and I paid $25 straight run but I'm going to have a much better starting point when I ask for eggs from y'all to start my own hobby line. And if I remember correctly yours lay such nice dark eggs. That's valuable!!!
