International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Well, It was difficult to cull them but one Blue Copper and 4 Birchen/Blue Birchen cockerels had to go. They where delicious though. I deboned 3 of them and put them in the freezer.

Glad they at least tasted good. :hugs

I’m selling my flock, already have interest from FB. My cockerel attacked me again this morning, totally unprovoked as I walked into the pen with feed, and kept coming even after I shoved him back with the bottom of my boot to his chest. He had gone after my Pug a while back, so he had lost yard privileges already. He’s gotten too big for his britches. Sad to see them go, but i gave him enough chances.

I am so sorry! I have had my fair share of aggressive roosters. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. It is hard for me to cull them. These where so tame but I can only keep so many. I still have 10 cockerels. I will eventually cull 4 more but they are all good enough to sell as breeders. So no freezer camp for them.

Whew what a year!
Can’t believe it’s been so long since I was on here. Has Chooks Man come back? Last I remember he sold his flock I think. Somehow don’t have any Marans pics on my phone, but I do have this odd rooster. And adorable hen that I HAD to share with you. These two are Ayam Cemanis. Supposedly pure. However, we are almost 100% sure this roo is crossed with maybe a Marans? Not sure. Opinions? He has copper everywhere a Maran would have it, but no leg feathers.

He's neat looking but not necessarily mixed. A lot of people have problems with leakage coming through on cemanis. I had about 4 males and two of them had leakage like that. Not quit as extreme but they did have it. It's one of those annoying genes that can pop up on them that should never be bred forward.

I’ve seen more silver leakage on ACs than the gold/red. I’d suggest posting it on the breed/gender forum. BYC has some very good genetics folks that could help you narrow down the possibilities, based on trait combinations.

Thanks guys. We’re new to these guys still. Never heard of red leakage! Thanks though.

pure ayam cemani is 100% black, even inside. the roo is some mix, the hen (pullet?) looks more like ayam cemani. look inside her mouth, it should be all black.

This is my first winter with BCM chickens. Mine are little peddler lines.

Even though egg production has dropped significantly among all my chickens (many breeds), I can't help but notice that my BCM have stopped laying all together. It's been at least 2 weeks since I've seen a chocolate egg. I have 3 BCM chickens.

I do have at least 1 chicken that's an egg eater, but usually I know when that has happened since the nest is full of yolk and egg shell. This hasn't happened in a while because I've been collecting more often that usual to prevent egg-eating (which usually happens when eggs remain in the nest for a while).

Can anyone with little peddler lines tell me how their chickens are doing in terms of laying? Or anyone with different lines care to comment on BCM laying prowess in general?

Thanks!
