International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

missed you guys. Chooksman so thankful to see you back! I think you have no idea how much you have helped us all understand the breed in a holistic way. USA marans scene is kinda misinformed eh. I've been away from the thread for awhile myself, having lost my best friend in my profile pic, truly soul-crushing to the core, and also, busy with work. I hope to go back in the pages and keep notes. Wondering how many others have a "chicken doc" saved on a laptop or desktop with pictures from the thread. I try to keep one's username near the info so I can remember the source etc. It's all very slapdashed together. Oh well, still learning. <3 Getting the hatching center set up today, finally selling eggs and now mr. lee isn't so neggy about my "hobby" (it was never a hobby in my mind) LOL My old rooster needs a replacement but he's quite handsome and hard to beat so I'll be hatching hatching hatching hatching hatching (I would guess). Which brings me to another point, good lort! how do you have the patience for getting the perfect male. Last season grew up many, 2 to a year old, and both turned out to be subpar for me in coloring. I can post pics of them if anyone is curious about what I'm discarding and why. Still better than what you see on facebook :lau

Anyway I'm going into this spring with a good deal of patience and thankfulness and I wish you all the same. I hope our good genetics continue to spread and we dont suffer upsets from predator or disease. I took a LONG think on it (many long discussions with mr. lee) and I've decided to continue keeping the black birchen marans. I dont gaf what we are now supposedly calling them, black silver whatever, I'm going to keep calling them that. I also don't like the look of the new criteria for black birchens with the breast lacing.

PS: new puppy is mending my heart "well good" :love
I am so sorry for your loss. My soul dog is my black shepherd. Those losses hit us very hard. Your new pup is breathtaking, congratulations :love

here so

the lacing on the breast of the Birchen rooster and the Black copper is very important.
it is the original Standard .
when we loose the lacing on the rooster breast we are going to start to producing black pullets .
peoples mixed up the Solid black marans with a Black copper long time ago .and now we are paying the price for it .
if you want to keep breeding a well marked Birchen you have to select your birchen cockerels with a lacing on they chest .
a good marans breeder will know how much lacing is needed on the rooster chest to produce a well marked progeny .
the brest should have the right amount of lacing . too much will yield a over couloured progeny . not enough lacing will produce black pullets as progeny .

@baunlee

I have to comment on this rooster in detail . those type of BCM rooster are hard to come by .
Body type = 10/10 .Rectangular shape .
Body mass =10/10. well chunky and solidly build .
Body marking = 10/10 . great pattern , all there nothing is missing .
Copper type = 10/10 . rich red uniform copper , absence of any other shade of copper .
Plumage type =10/10 . true black with less sheen and well tight . no sign of any loose feathers or fluff .
Head = 9/10, nice flat heat .correct orange eyes .correct beak colour and size .correct wattles ,nice colour and size. lovely comb .texture ,size and shape ,the points are not well lined up . it is a reason he lost 1 point .
Neck = 10/10. solid right length ,well arched at the top .lush hackle .great copper with a minimum flames .
Back =10/10 .flat long and well coloured .
Tail = 6/10 . correct shape ,correct length and a wrong angle a little higher .should not pass the 60 degree . 45 is the right angle .the reason I took 4 point
Feet /Shanks = 10/10 . right length .correct colour ,well feathered .

95/100 points .that what I ll give him .
