International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Lol I need an intervention too. I am a Marans hoarder. I need to get to culling but I keep procrastinating.
I know it's for the best. I keep thinking I should keep them for layers. I would have to feed them all winter though. They are just starting to lay. I would have more room for more Coppers next year. The battle in my head! Just let them go! Lol

Let them go my friend .trust me next year you will see your pens full of gorgeous and correct BC and BLC marans .
you say when you breed a line ,doesn t mean the owrk is finished ,actually the hard work will start .keeping a pure and well bred lne take a lot time and space ,focussing on BC/BLC varieties is a best thing for you .

all the best .

My two BC pullets are not old enough or I probably would be hatching in February. No that would make me hauling buckets of water up the slope with ice and snow. I think Chooksman said at least 9 months before hatching from them. I am getting the itch to hatch.

yes 9 months plus or when they eggs passes 65g .
bigger the eggs better are the chicks.

Those are 3 different pullets. Pic 1 and 2 are of the first pullet (red band), pic 3 is of the second pullet, and pic 4 is of the 3rd pullet (brown eyes).

Thank you. I hate that they didn't do better, but you win some and you lose some. Today was not my day showing Marans, but someday I'll have my day. I just have to keep working with them.

They didn't go by the SOP for Marans at all. Lots of copper, feather condition, and big birds is what the judges care about.

they have no right to give they opinion in some thing they don t know .
what they say does not count for me .What I see is more important .

your chooks are very good ..love to see some photos of the pullets that beat them .

@kfelton0002

this pullet is 90 plus point in my book ,
body type ,
the quality of the copper ,there is enough there .
the quality of her plumage type
the faultless tail .
correct feets .

her eyes could be more orange ,and her comb could be tiddy ,but off eyes and comb do not have any DQ ,

they just doon t know what they are doing .

Thank you! She was my favorite. I hadn't worked with her at all and literally put her up to condition a week prior to the show. Her feathers were nearly immaculate despite free ranging with many cockerels. She was also very docile and well behaved just like the two Ive been working with for the last 2 months.

I agree that the judges shouldnt be judging blind. They should be educated on every breed or have the SOP in front of them if they are unfamiliar. I'm not sweating it, but it does put a bad taste in my mouth for showing. I hope my next show goes better.

@kfelton0002

what they saying was wrong with this pullets ,they should go and find another job to do .for sure I will let them come near my marans 1000%

keep doing what you are already doing .you are getting there .especialy if you work with @marchick .

They just said they picked the more flashier birds. The birds that beat mine had lots of color and their copper was brighter, so that is what they were looking for. They didnt day anything was really "wrong" with my birds.
