International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

You are wrapping up your hatching season just as we begin ours here in Kentucky. Congrats on your many many babies! My husband has decided to fire up the incubator next week to get some Game chicks hatched early. I dread brooding chicks in the dead of winter, but it must be done. On a positive note, I am finished with my BSN classes and will be graduating with a 4.0. Very stoked about that. Now I'll have more time for the chickens. :D

Congratulations on the 4!!! Well done!!! And the best of luck with the hatching.

I weighed #010 (the pullet you said would make a good conformation breeder). She only weighs 1.9 kg (6 months old). I gave her a dose of dewormer because she felt just a tad thin. Should I give her time to fill out more or just throw her out? @Chooks man

very thin she is about a pound lighter . not a breeder .mass is very important especially pullets/hens .

Yes mass is very important and I don't want to produce small birds. I will throw her out today then. Thanks! :D

never breed a small hen/pullets ,I do prefer use a big black hen over a small well colored hen in my breeding programs .
i do use a well colored cockerel if he is small over a big hen , only if the cockerel is special .I have tried it many times and I got good results ,big birds like they mother hen .

always select a big pullet who lay dark eggs even if she is black ,
always select a well correct colored cockerel even if he is small .
