International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I am situated in the UK and they aren't really bothered about the wing but Shelley's tail is definitely too big! I just dont have the heart to get rid of him because I have had him from an egg and he is so sweet to me and eats out of my hands which the other roosters don't do. I will probably try and keep him in a retirement pen with some of the ex battery hens I have and will go on the hunt for a new rooster. 😊 Thank you for going over them for me!

who are they ? the peoples who made SOP? or just peoples who have marans?
here we breed to the French SOP .and the SOP say your hens are watched up .they call them in french } Breached type } the wheaten hen should have a darker upper body . and darker hackle marking .

find a cockerel with a black/grey under fluff and you will say some correct wheaten marans will come out of your hens .they body type is sublime not they body color .

"They" are the National Poultry Show of Great Britain's maran judges. Unfortunately, the wheaten colour has become virtually extinct in England now, because people are leaning more towards the other colours. As a result of this the standards have been changed. Shame really, it is such a beautiful colouration, that is why it is so hard to get quality stock because there are so few breeders left. 😕🐔

Is this the sort of colouration you are referring to?

your cockerel is more of Langshan type . throw back well know in marans population .time ago Langshan where part of third crossing to make marans ,so we still have a throw back ,but we have to select for long ,flat and wide body type . not a V shape .

we do made SOP we just breed toward it .

Ok, well I think I have a good cockerel to work with correct? Also he is only about 7-8 months old. So is if safe to say he has filled out completely? Or is it likely he may still change some?

he is going to get heavier ,he has a solid bones . but will always stay square .it is not the end of the world , if he is matted to hens with a longer flat back ,than they progeny will be correct .most or half of them .
I worked .and still working with a sqaure V type rooster like yours if they have other desirable trait .like dark eggs ,good mass ,etc......... BUT I always make sure I mate them to the right hens .I don t mate them so I can just hatch chicks . I mate them to correct the fault they have .

if you post photos of your hens you have in mind to mate to .so we can see if they match up .
rooster is half the equation ,the hen is the other half . so don t panic .

he has a lot great qualities . great head
correct eyes .
great size comb even the point are damaged but genetically correct . those day marans rooster have Laghorn comb .long large not good .
good legs . wide rear .
great tail .wrong angle ,but a good shape tail .
lovely complete body pattern ,just the hackle is split .no good .but the pattern is great ,his daughters will never be black for sure .
his neck is strong well arched .sign of strength and vigor .

you just 1 right hen to compliment him . he will throw good strong chicks . this hen has to be long and flat .even if she is black not problem .with this guy .

yes my friend . you can see all 3 colors { red hackle , wheat upper body and wing . cream chest and under body } are present and well balanced .
rooster has a good black body . well angled tail but not a correct shape .should be shorter and full

you hens have a better tail .

shame .it is a great color .hard to balance it . lot wheaten breeders finding it very hard to keep balance the golden hackle of the male with a red hackle of the hen .
and it is hard to keep balance to light cream under fluff of the hens and a pure black on the rooster . correct hens will produce grey under fluff , not black/grey .

if you don t find a good wheaten rooster than look for a Black Tail Buff marans rooster .they work great with wheaten . produce a clean pattern .

I do not have any BCM hens yet. I have 20 eggs due to hatch tomorrow so it will be a long journey before I can breed him to other Marans. This is a fun hobby for me. I have had several roosters and this guy is very easy going with the hens and does not seem so heavy that he will damage the hens. Time will tell. I will be sure to keep posting updates. Thank you for your feedback! :highfive:
