I will do this.
They look awful right now after the breeding season. Bare backs and heads on some. Mr. Good comb was rough when breeding. Glad he's gone.

2 hens have gone broody. Not a good trait.

I have been worming because of dirty bumbs too and have a couple that need to be wormed again directly too.

don t wortry about how they loook now after the molt they will look great .

Actually, breed to LS.
Not MS as her cockerels are tall.

I like LS babies ,loog looking cockerel in there with a solid thick wide legs . let see how they grow out .now we know they dam .easy for us if we like them we can do back crossing to LS ( son s over dam breeding method ) to reinforce the good traits .

when you know what your breeder s are throwing and what pairing work ,breeding become an art more fun .
the hard part is to find out who is doing what .

I'm going to go back and reread this conversation later again but just wanted to say theirs a lot of great info I'm digesting.
Lots of notes, lots of pics, focus on one bird at time, not whole flock. I'm trying to learn the genetics but it's overwhelming. This thread and the new one is invaluable.

make it simple for your self my friend ,each time cofus on one particular hen ,lok at her see how she move ,how she stand ,how she carry her tail .what her legs look like ,wright them all down .
I have posted many post describing how good marans should look like .
one chooks and one trait at the time you will get far .never get overwhemed .
never look at your flock all at the same time .will be confused for sure .


today I spent all my obsevation time looking at Dark Angel .I noticed that all my hens have clean bumb after I wormed them 2 weeks ago except Dark Angel .she still have durty bumb . she look very healthy and active ,so I have to do some thing about her soon .maybe she did not drink the worming solution ?

A problem you guys are having is : you are trying to do too many things at one time . Bad practice . Do what important first like understanding correct Marans body type and how work around it forget about the other traits . If the Marans we working with have a wrong body type and do not lay dark eggs than doesn t matter if they have great tail or proper eyes or nice body color or any thing .
Understand the Marans body type . What important and make them lay dark eggs .
Know your Marans each bird what they quality and what they faults.
