International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

agre with you they have a correct marans body type ,took me few crosses to achieve that
now I eed to fix the dark egg genes and split my flock into many different families to avoid imbreeding .
I m pleased you like they body type .you in Europe see a lot marans ,
chooks man
What crosses exactly did you make? All within the Marans breed or some outcrossing as well?

Yes, here in Germany we see quite a lot of them, although I have to say that important qualities and traits of the breed seem to get lost with breeders focusing on expositions only.

the crosses I made where only marans X marans .
friend of mine and I worked a long time to restore a breed to it glory because peoples in oz where focussing only on breeding dark eggs layer .
first we crossed the old OZ line . this line of splash/ dominant white and blue copper where here before the shut down of the border in 1949 .old classical marans ,they where big mlong ,feathered legs lay very large dark eggs .
second lines where the french import from different peoples who manage to get them in the country as fertile eggs few line ,they where short on they feet ,a little square lay dark long eggs
third line where the latest import from the UK English type .they where big ,tall on they feet ,clean legs ,aly lighter eggs .they had a problem with they legs because they where big and tall .
first we crossed the old OZ lines to the French one ,we still have this crosses ,they are long and wide lay dark eggs ,
second cross we made is crossing the progeny from OZ X French to the English type to add size and maitain the large round eggs traits .
the young hens I posted yesterday ,the one you liked are the F2 progeny so they are all different percentage of genes from each original line .some are 50% English 25% OZ and 25% French
other are 33% each lines
some are %0% OZ 25% French and 25% English
we breding out the English type

agree with you the classical marans type is getting lost with this new breders ,,they breed for show or dark egg ,they do not breed for the other traits like hardiness ,health , better foranger etc....................
my older flock are 5 and 4 years old now they still very healthy and laying ,they eggs lost the dark color .

Yes I think the type we’re referencing is vCJD, originating from BSE (mad cow disease), I think it was mostly a British thing. I’m pretty sure the origins were feeding processed and infected beef and bone to cattle, giving them ‘mad cow disease’, which when fed to people could cause Jacobs’s. That’s why you don’t see any British beef or dairy anywhere outside of the isles, no one trusts it anymore, though there have been no cases in people for many years.

That’s also one reason why British farming regulations are so strict, for example it is now illegal to feed any animal product to any livestock intended for human consumption, including eggs and dairy. You can’t even feed mealworms to chickens.

The common theme is neurologically Ill livestock, so that’s why I think eating sick birds should be avoided. Actually, as I write this I become more against the idea of eating any ill bird.

it seems the british took blame and paid for it. mad cow's decease and more happened as well in some other european countries. I personally don't buy anything that comes from netherlands. even seeds are infected. due to infected potato and onion seeds imported from netherlands we now have overtreated expensive veggies. some people gave up planting and sold land for photovoltaic panels. it was banned to sell fertile land for photovoltaics but as it is long term infected they got the permit to sell it.

It was the deceased sheep gone crazy they shreddered and fed to the cows that led to the bovine variation which was finally able to infect humans as well.

But other than that you are totally right

mad cow's disease happened in france at the napoleon times. the cows grazed on the fields where many soldiers were buried after the battle. that way they ate bones or what remained of them. cows are 100% herbivores and should never ever eat anything else. but greedy people tried to get more meat and messed up.

here we have fire, drought and snow for a week or two, but might be heavy. luckily I am on the top of a slope so no flood. I do have huge puddles at some parts of the paths but that is not flood.
at lease some thing less to worryabout ,flood .when does happen it is very bad , that are all bad any way .
hope we stay safe .

Thank you for your detailed answer.
Breeding out the English type seems sensible to me as chickens with leg issues are not what you want to see as a breeder.

As it seems you are on a good path and have the required patience and knowledge to be really successful with your project.

And you have enough space to keep them happy and healthy as well.

Wishing you all the best at your new place!

thank you ,I will try my best like I always do .
chooks with a bad legs have no place in my breeding programs .
health and conformation are the base of my breeding programs .
