Caught some pics of Prince also a week or so ago. Just turned a year in July. He's got his dad's tail so I'm gonna wait for his molt to see what happens but I worry about him inheriting King's neurological issue also so I think he's a cull, unfortunately. He's turning out to be a good boy also. View attachment 3625948View attachment 3625950View attachment 3625951
I'm sure he's a nice boy but from experience, that squirrel tail will haunt you if you breed him.

As is your roo!

Thank you but unfortunately their all hatchery stock. I'm not a full blown breeder to sop yet but I'm looking for better quality. Kong is my best looking bird out of my 3 but he's overcolored and not wide all the way back to his rump. But I'm gonna test mate him to see what he throws for progeny and go from there with help from the resident experts. Lots to learn still.
I can pump out some Olive Eggers and Midnight Majesty Marans in the meantime tho.

I have had some success in breeding, but I have had this flock for 10 years now. There are some hits and misses, but overall, I have made progress with my black silvers. If you want a cockerel, I have way more than I need, but we will soon be butchering the first batch soon, I like to go into winter with the flock culled down to breeders and potential replacements. My husband would get very fussy if I keep too many. I have about 50 extra cockerels, I think, probably 2/3 of them are definitely culls, the rest I am going to have to make some hard choices on who I am keeping. If you are interested in picking up a black silver cockerel, I am in Montana so that's usually out of the way for most people.

It sounds like the Marans Roos can be nice big boys. With respect of course. I loved your advice on roosters wrathsfarm! So good! Would the Birchen male be a ridiculous acquisition for my little debut Marans flock? I have Wheaten, Splash, Golden Cuckoo, and the Blue Copper/Ameraucana olive egger gal. I'm* really* attracted to that silver look. I was told DO NOT breed Wheaten to Black Copper. Right?
If you go through Montana, I can help you with a black silver cockerel.

I wanted to say hello over here. :) I am fairly new to chickens but have a few varieties of Marans pullets and am probably getting a cockerel soon. You see, I was apparently destined for Marans... My mom's maiden name is Mauze. The family is traced back to a Templar Knight from the First Crusade named Guillaume the Bastard (illegitimate son of the Count of Champagne). He challenged and won a feudal Lordship in Aquitaine (France) at the Chateau of Mauze. Many subsequent generations became the "Lords of Mauze and Marans" until they were removed from their swampy lands and persecuted. They came to Britain and America known as Huguenots, leaving their Marans chickens behind on the blood soaked French soil. But the French breed we still know today is the direct result of the Templar ships bringing their chickens ashore near the village of Marans and mating with feral French poultry!
