International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I have 1 dominant white bird, so I'm familiar with how that works. I was just asking for a gal I know who has White Marans and a lady on Facebook is trying to tell her that her birds are gold based just by "the kind of white" they are. It sounded completely wrong to me, that's why I asked. Will chicks from gold-based birds look different at hatch? I did notice I the pics she sent me that they have kind of blue hued/slate legs.

Blue legs will likely be the slate leg gene, separate from white. Bresse chickens are the best example of this. The difference are more apparent as they mature, as this is when gold and silver are expressed the strongest in most birds. At hatch they will all look the same, as far as I’m aware, typical white/yellow chicks.

People often think that English marans are just clean legged French marans. This is not the case. To me, they are almost different breeds. For example, you cannot call a clean legged (often hatchery quality) BCM ‘English type’, as this colour simply does not exist in the UK standard.

This drawing highlights the differences between the two. It makes it annoying as obviously in the only one aiming for the English type, while helping people aim for the other, but I kind of appreciate the English standard’s unnecessary disapproval of the French standard, even if they invented them.

it’s one way I actually disagree with Chooksman’s posts, as he called any clean legged marans English type, regardless of type or colour. I realise, however, that this might be a strange result of the Australian Marans club allowing both types and most colours, rather than him being wrong.

I completely understand what you're saying! When I was breeding English Orpingtons I was constantly trying to explain to people that their type is completely different

Are American Orpingtons different too? I didn’t know this, how could you want to change the OG English Orpington?!

They are very different! American is slimmer, not near as round, and zero pantaloons Some of my ladies, past and present. Look at any hatchery here, their orps are pitiful at best.

A classic black orpi cock. He could win/do well in a show here, a real shame US judges wouldn’t see his quality.

I appreciate your dedication to the true heritage of this traditional English breed, keep up the good work I’d also love to know more about your birds but maybe send me them directly or on my thread rather than the marans one.

I don’t mind the differences between English and French/US marans as I appreciate the English type has had utility and it’s own heritage in this country since the original imports, and I don’t think the true character is harmed. US Orpingtons however, seem to throw away all the character of the breed.

Just ordered some BCM hatching eggs. Some arrive next week and the rest arrive late April. Shipped eggs won't have a great hatch rate and this is my first go with this breed. I ordered from breeders. I'm hoping to have good quality birds. I need help learning this breed standard. Does anyone have a good source to get me familiar?

I'm a Delaware girl through and through and that's all I do but I want to test the waters with this breed and the dark eggs.

I heard that this breed matures late? Is this true in all cases or some cases.

Also.. is it easy to tell the males from females at an early age? With Delawares those combs get pink fast. By 2-3 weeks I can tell the males easily. Are BCM the same or no?
