Is food grade sulfur different than using DE?

I suspect that sulfur (food grade or otherwise) will kill mites far better than Diatomaceous Earth. The reason i believe this is because farmers once used 400,000,000 pounds of powdered sulfur each year to control spider mites in cotton.
