I’m thinking it’s mites so we cleaned out coop yesterday and dusted all the girls but just want to make sure.
Here are pictures and it only seems to be the one but we did treat them all. This is my first year for molting chickens so trying to figure out the difference.

I have attached several photos

It's molting for sure. You can check for mites, since that has to be done close up, and it could have both things going on, but I'm not seeing raggedy, chewed on feathers that indicate mites.

I just checked and don’t see anything, but I thought if they lost feathers on the backside/vent it was bugs. :barnieWell at least the coop is clean for the winter and I can say I did a preventive:) although really glad It’s just molting!

Thank you all!!!

I see lots of pin feathers - highly suggestive of molting especially since the skin looks so clean and pink :)

Jamity, if you didn't find any mites, I suspect they are just fine, but in molt. Molt usually starts around the head/neck area, and moves downward, all the way to the vent. Yes, during molt they lose their vent feathers too. Relax, take a deep breath, this is normal.

MY girls literally shake and go naked all at once. It doesn't start anywhere. In fact I had one girl this year loose EVERYTHING except her wing and head feathers. OMG she looked ready for the stew pot. THen she was such a pin cushion she didn't even want to sit to roost. I felt bad for her.
