Is it normal for chicks to be super loud during the night?

I remember reading in a post somewhere that someone had put a substitute mommy in the cage - like a stuffed animal that had room for the chicks to get underneath. Wonder if that would work.

That said, we got chicks last year and yes, they definitely disturbed my sleep! I threw a blanket over the cage at night, but still, they were loud, and they stunk.

This year I had a broody hen raise my chicks for me. She hatched 8 chicks and at night they sleep in a dog crate I made comfy for them outside (away from the others in the coop). Now when I close them up at night and they're peeping, I think, ah, let mommy hen put up with that this year! I don't have to. And in the morning when I open the crate up, the hen is the grumpy one, and not me. I highly recommend letting a hen do the hard work for you.
