My mother always told us as children, you have two names use either one.

My sibling twins had middle names of Gary and she was Gay (which she's gotten alot of flack about lately) Much better names then the Ulysses and Unis my paternal grandmother wanted, lol

I'm named after both grandmothers. My mom's mother Elisa, my second name I love!

It was believed to be for my great grandpa Elias.

Sadly we learned the name was his girlfriend he left behind in Spain when he migrated to Mexico.

So I'm named after my great grandpa's girlfriend, lol

Go figure

My real name is Summer, my brothers (who were teens when I was born) hated the name (probably because it sounds like a hippie...) so, my mom made my middle name something that I could call myself or about 5-6 nicknames based on my middle name in case I didn't like ym name when I got older and wanted to call myself something else.

My mother insisted on naming me after her father, because her family disliked the fact she got married and got pregnant immediately afterward (I was born 9 months after my parents married a year after they met fist marriage for each no shack ups) I have 10 older male 1st cousins and 1 male 1st cousin once removed all 3+ years older than myself (yes all born before my parents met). My grandfather had a really really odd name and everyone who has seen my name 100% of the time ask how is that pronounced or If they are told the name how is that spelled? and every single person says they have never heard of it before. All except my family on mom's side.
I have been told I am evil, the spawn of satan and much worse because I have refused to use my first name since high school and they say I am disrespectful to my grandfather for not using it. he died 5 months after I got out of school. I tell them if I am disrespectful they are much more so for not naming his 10 grand sons and 1 great grandson who where born before my parents even met that name. I am told that's not the point I am evil for not using that name and what's funny is 90% of the time when I get invitations to graduations and weddings and such from my cousins they misspell my first name and all my family refuses to use my middle name for the following reasons.
1) my middle name is not my legal name even tho its on my birth certificate, ss card, drivers license, selective service card, cc permit, high school and college diplomas
2) even if it is my legal name it's illegal for me to use it (even tho my mom's oldest sister's husband and their youngest son use their middle names it is legal and okay for them to use middle names)
3) since I was named after my grandfather and he never used his middle name i can't use my middle name (even tho we have different middle names)
I've been told I'm not part of the family by some because I don't look like my mom's family I look like my dad and apparently no one in my mom's family looks like the other parent's family just my mom's side....
So all that being said am I the nut here or am I the flour in this fruit cake?

Hard eyeroll at all your family. My husbands family passes down names too. Him and his cousin share a first name for this reason. His cousin goes by his middle name. I didnt even know my grand mothers first name until i was in highschool because she hated it and went by her middle name. My cousins husband goes by his middle name and wont even respond to his first name because it was his dads name and his parents called him by his middle nane from when he was born.

Its not that weird to go by your middle name.

Now you have me curious though what is your first name?

"it's the most popular name in man kinds history and whoever says they never heard of it before is a liar and the whole world lies" according to all of my mom's siblings and her. it's Verner and as I said my cousins can't even spell it even of it is their grandfathers name and he was name came from a book. My aunt said she and all her brothers and sisters are unable to tell lies and that they knew all there was to know about everything. I asked her if the Bible was true she said yes. I told her if all that was true I had to be Jesus because according to the bible only God knows everything and cannot lie and she got mad at me, I wonder why? lol

Ive heard of that name before though not as a persons name. When i was younger my mom flipped her car over a 6 foot drop on Verner mtn. Rd. :thumbsup so at least 1 person has heard of it :)

There is an internationally famous German documentary director, Werner Herzog, who pronounces his first name "Verner" like you. They just Americanized your name spelling. I think if you moved to California everyone would be familiar with it. :-D I kinda like it but you are totally reasonable to go by a middle name! My husband also has gone by his middle name since birth.

Yes, Werner is a common german name. At least your name is pronounced how it looks, people don't even have to know german to correctly pronounce the "w" as a "v". I feel sorry for the Irish girls outside Ireland, all the Siobhans and the Saiorses and the gaelic spelt named girls.
Isn't there another name Verna? Does that have the same derivation, I wonder?
Anyway, you are the one that has to go around with your name, you get to choose. It's ok for little babies to get called whatever by their families, but you shouldn't have to put up with it for a lifetime if you don't want to.

Wouldn't it be funny if Grampa's name actually WAS Werner, but because of the way it was pronounced the "family" just "assumed" the spelling was with a "V" vice the real "W" that it should be? :lau Something to consider. On my birth cert, my middle name is spelled with a "u" in it but whoever wrote it made it look like an "a"... so as a kid, I was confused as to what letter it actually was. I used the "a" when I joined the military so all my military docs have the "a" when in fact my actual name is a spelled with a "u". Doesn't much matter as I know who I am :D
