Is This dry pox? eye is getting worse! cream not working, help! (PICS)

It will not hurt them even if they are incubating it, but if they are already incubating an infection the vaccine will not prevent it.

I get mine from First State Veterinary Supply. It's cheap - but there is the shipping. They ship the vaccine and diluent, which you mix togehter. The include a metal prong (looks like a double sewing needle with a plastic handle) that you dip in the vaccine and stick through the wing web. It's not hard, but with grown birds you should have a helper to hold the birds.

Don't worry - they will be all right. If any develop wet pox, feel free to PM me and I will tell you what I did to help mine through it.

Thank you so much for all your help! It really means alot!
I'll check out the vaccine. Alittle nervous because i'm very squeamish when it comes to needles and injections.
Is there a way i could mess up and accidentally hurt them? Ive never vaccinated a bird before.

I didn't want to push you before but, now I see more peeps are saying the same thing. I figured I'd chime in again. I'm not being pushy I am just telling you if it were my flock I would vaccine ALL the ones not showing signs of aliement. Remember vaccines are the dead virus and basically go into their system and help their immune fight the dead virus so that if they are exposed to the real one it downgrades their system. You can buy the vaccine at Jefferslivestock.com. But, remember if you vaccinate one you have to do them all. They carry it once they are vaccinated. If you go to jefferslivestock under poultry vaccines it's there. Then you click on the manuf. link. It tells you about the disease and why it is good to vaccine. I don't know who told you they would die if you did it but, maybe they had a unique situation and things happened b/c of that? But, I vaccine some of my flock at one farm and my other farm that just has my laying flock I do not. They are my closed flock that I never introduce new birds to and they are not exposed.

Thanks so much for the photo's that definitely sounds/looks similar!
So your saying it would be safe to vaccinate my others? I'm just scared that the vaccine could hurt them if they already have it and i just don't know.
Where do i get the vaccine? how much is it?

No, i understand what you are saying.
I just wanted to make sure i wasn't going to hurt them by giving them the vaccine.
I just want to do whats best for my babies. So please feel free to express what you feel would help.
I'm definitely looking into the vaccine now.
And will definitely vaccinate all my chickens in the future.

oh, and do we only need one vial?
We have to vaccinate 6 chickens

It's not the best video b/c it doesn't really show the placement but, it gives you an idea of how easy it is

omg i have to stab through their wing?
th.gif

Think i'm going to faint
hide.gif
do they bleed?

Unfortunately, yes you do its the webbing of the wing. They do but, it is ever sooo slightly and really nothing at all to worry about trust me!! When the state comes out to test my flock for AI and SP they use a knife to slit the vein in the underside of the wing close to the bone vrs. the webbing. Then they bleed them and draw into a vile. Yes it can be hard to watch if you are afraid of that kinda thing but, I think b/c I was a vet tech and assisted in surgeries It seems like nothing. But, I have heard from good poultry friends of mine that yes it is upsetting but you have to look at the big picture. It is helping your flock from contracting something that can kill them or if it doesn't kill them it can make them soo sick it can be unbearable to watch.

to you!!! I know you can do it. But, like the other person said have a family member or friend help you. I really think it takes two ppl to do young or old to properly hold the wing in place and the other to properly adminster the prong in the right place.

You can do it I promise!!
