Is this something I should be suspicious of?

Well, OP, your chick is a bit over 4 weeks you say? My RIR cockerel was a bit more feathered than yours is at the same age, but yours seems to have the about same sized comb, if not your chick having a comb a little tiny bit bigger than Pepper's was at that age. In 1-2 weeks or less it should be a bit more obvious.... Pepper's comb just shot up one day. But I'd definitely say your chick is a cockerel. Well then you would most likely be a Silkie. Silkies are unpredictable.

We don't keep silkies.

Ohh, ohh, I DO have the tinfoil hat gene though....that was actually my Halloween costume last year
