The startle factor is real. Snakes are a good example. I'm not afraid of snakes but usually they startle me because I don't know there there until they move when they're right under my feet. Then I look like a ninny because I scream and jump back.

I had a game hen commit suicide like that. I found her with her head in 2x4 welded wire. Stiff as a board. I could only guess she broke her own neck. Probably stuck her head out to grab grass pulled back freaked out and killed herself

Mice have done that to me once or twice. Snakes not as much.

Sudden movements from small animals don't startle me as much as they used to, which I'm happy about.

I just looked it up and apparently it means a foolish or stupid person. Growing up I understood the meaning to be someone who was easily scared so I guess that's not correct.
