Isa's Homestead Happenings and Hangout

Also recently learned that in the southern states it's common to have an ac unit per floor of your house. We don't have that here either. One unit that has to cool your whole house. That's why I spend a lot of time in my basement on the hottest days.
Well, we can lead you to water, but we can't make you be smart enough to drink it. I mean we can only hope :idunnoBut, if you like only using part of your house at different times of the year, then I guess you don't have a problem.

I haven't heard of AC units for different floors in personal homes. ngl. Though I would understand it in Florida.
Very common if you want to be comfortable and the HVAC units to be efficient.
I don’t get why having AC on multiple floors is shocking? Why would you want to roast on one floor but not another? I’m so confused lol maybe I’m missing something here.
There you go Dawg! I am impressed 👏
.... That's also why I asked if the houses cost a million bucks.
Well, yea, some cost much more than a million, but it has nothing to do with your HVAC unit

There are a few reasons to use separate HVAC units on different floors and sometimes even on the same floor. Too many to list without going into HVAC 101. But, one is because of sizing of units. Once you reach a certain size they are considered commercial units and not residential and cost more and do not have the same warranty. Commercial units are only warranted usually for 1 year versus normally 10 for residential. They are more durable, though. You can do it if you want to. But, the biggest reason is that it just works much better that way. And, it doesn't cost that much more to do it.

This to a T. A couple friends of mine have 3 units cause of this. One was cause they have a courtyard and it would have been too much of a run with duct and still be efficient enough to not prematurely burn up one.

Well, you see... People used to just build houses so that the air would flow appropriately and while upstairs might be warmer, if your ac worked properly, you wouldn't roast.
Cause running ac units is expensive, and electric prices don't go down.

Maybe I am just poor.
It will cost you more trying to use a unit that way and still not be comfortable. Pay a little more upfront to save and be comfortable in the long run. I mean you can live without any central HVAC. They have not been around but a short period of time really. It really wasn't that long ago when most homes did not have it. 90's was really when it started to take off and be common place. Once you get used to it, it is much harder to be without it.

It is funny, but the young here probably didn't know you used to could buy vehicles without A/C. Actually, it was an addon in most vehicles. The same with power steering, power brakes, power door locks, mirrors etc... You had a 260 or maybe a 460 a/c unit. "Roll" down 2 or 4 windows and do 60mph

I feel like perhaps window units are being referred to as the same thing as ac units here.... Which might be my fault.

One of those per floor?
This is a thing y'all do?

You forgot automatic transmission. These days, it's a miracle to find a manual in anything.

I actually have told people the reason their cars and houses cost way more than their grandparents is because we take everything like ac and power windows and 3000 sqft for granted, and it really didn't used to be that way.

So that's a split unit. The compressor lives outside and the condensor and blower live in the attic or an interior closet, etc... ANd yes. I have 2 of those 3 ton units on my house.

(edit: )
It isn't always per floor either. It's usually determined by square footage. Rule of thumb is 1 ton of AC per 500-600 sq feet of house. SO if you have a large single story house you may have multiple units too. In a 2 story, it is just a logical split upstairs and down usually.

Our society has become soft in ways because of it. I even wonder how we are able to go over to the Middle East to fight these wars and conflicts because of it. Maybe that is why we cannot get a decision victory anymore.
