Isa's Homestead Happenings and Hangout

I don't think it will ever come full circle. It's more like a wave, peaks and valleys but always going forward.
Some peoples idea of "forward" is others idea of backwards or sideways or WTH.
Agree it's gotta keep moving though. Stagnant would kill it so....
There are a number of people on BYC who are homesteading/small scale farming or are employed in similar fashion. It's not a "these poultry / livestock are pets", it's "we are making a living raising this stock or we are relying on it as a food source."
Those are among the ones that I miss the most and no they aren't all gonna aways be here. They are leaving.
If you notice many of them stand on a certain side and it's hard to stand there when here.
Another point of the forum becoming further from a simple chicken forum into all kinds of aspects that IMO doesn't have anything to do with being what the forum was originally meant to be.
I don't eat my chickens. I don't eat any of my animals but I grew up.around that.
Those are either old school generational or new age that will research the hell out of topics that I don't want to. I hate researching.
They have a different view and definitely bring ideas here that most aren't familiar with. Sometimes it reminds me of my youth but usually it reminds me that there's always different ways to do things.
Pay attention and you can learn things whether you want to incorporate into your chicken keeping or not.
I hatch 1,000 chicks a year and usually never get below 400 birds at any given time. You know how often I see anyone here that I can get ideas on brooding, raising, housing, feeders, water systems etc etc for dealing with volumes of birds? I used to be able to.
I 100% get you here. My long and winding response is far too depressing for BYC though. It's not just here that this is happening. I blame twitter and tik tok, but really I blame the mindset that we as humans are a product to be bought and sold by marketing companies. Wall-E and Idiocracy were not supposed to be documentaries...
Idk those movies but I understand the mindset and the world we now live in.
I just think there could still be room on the net for a simple place for chicken fools to get together and discuss chickens. Too much focus on the same ol same ol BS that's out there has taken over in here.
Gotta walk on eggshells here so to not offend or break rules. Eggshells should be to feed back to the chickens not to tip toe on.

💯

:highfive:

But also lots of adults, good members have either became drastically less active or left completely.
Looking at you, @Isadora
If this is true then BYC is making wide circles because in all the time I've been here I've seen a lot of changes but it's never become full circle. Just a long gradual morph from what it used to be.

What's this small core you speak of? What do you mean by their "livelihood"?

I agree but seems there's more going then coming.
I found BYC more then a decade ago. Like many internet searches always popped up something BYC. I lurked and learned. Then burned through a couple accounts coming and going myself. Then at some point I noticed this forum had gotten active, really active. I hate forums where they only get a few new posts a day.
When I joined this place was full of people that knew chickens. Everything chickens. I could hop on and learn things. I could interact with people that were out showing chickens. I could browse subjects about building coops, DIY feeders, waters, systems and ideas that were tried and true. Things that were tried and failed and why.
Genetics and hatching OMG I've always been into chicken genetics but I was home. So many members that knew more then me and was just as fanatic about it. I shared so much and learned so much.
Hatching..... love the whole incubator concept. Thinking outside the box. Homemade incubators or tweaking existing ones.
Basically if you liked chickens you could pick your interests and pick brains like no where else on the net.
Now look around. Like the way of the world it's just a social media outlet for the most part here. I get it. I adapted in a lot of ways to that and it's not completely bad but the core of why I became a member and why I stayed has been lost.
There are very few people that have extensive knowledge in so many areas or expertise in certain areas as there was when I first started here.
That's a shame and as BYC has shifted they've continued to leave and few others join.
It is what it is but it is. No PR spin needed. I miss the old BYC. The CHICKEN forum.
When people say it's the children coming in. I get that but to me it's more of new chicken enthusiasts. Lots of people coming here to ask questions and to learn but from who?
When the knowledgeable people are gone this place may as well be a facebook chicken group. That's the deep issue for me here and no one seems to care. Again I miss the old days.
As far as the forum dying.... people can PR spin that too but it's true. BYC became a social monster but social monsters die and new ones take over.
Anyone still on MySpace?
Look at numbers here. There's the thread about getting lurkers to join. Go back and compare. At any given time the online now members are less then half of what they were just a year or two ago. Everyone is noticing threads aren't hopping like they used to.
Sure some will still be around and some will come and go. For me I'm just waiting for things to come back around to where this place gets back to being what it once once..... a real chicken forum.
Will it happen?

And look people think Moony's not deep.... :lau
💯 I've been here for over five years and you are so right. It's not what it used to be

Me too. I miss the real chicken discussions some of us used to have.
I know of multiple members that haven't been on here for a few years, reason being there is a generation that is easily offended.

Ironically the ones that are easily offended were usually the ones that asked for advice and didn't like what was suggested.

Some of us have raised chickens for 20+ years and have figured out ways to do it that works for us.

Personally, I don't share much because there are those that need a library of "proven" methods that needed to be meticulously documented by college graduates in order for the method to be rightly functional and worth attempting.

Multiple ones have thrown their hands in the air and permanently left the forum or are dedicated lurkers.

It's easier for some of us to adapt to new trends, although it does get exhausting at times.

It appears the cold finally got my 2 tomato plants I didn’t pull up. I guess I will get the last off and have fried green tomatoes. Think it got my peppers, too. Everything else is looking good.

Mine are long dead 🤣😭
Yeah, it was sad. I have 3 ripe ones that were already in the house. I picked all the green ones off the dead plants today, and got about 30. I think I am going to take some of them and make a green tomato casserole this weekend. I have never tasted one, but have been wanting to do it.

I think I am more upset that my pepper plants got zapped. I have plenty pickled and dried but I love them fresh better. And, I had been making some nice stuffed Jalapenos in the air fryer. I have enough to make a few more batches, though.

Ahh that sucks! I was sad when my peppers finally went too. They lasted a long time. The green tomato thing sounds good though.
