Last night when i found a lethargic pullet and bloody discharge, i assumed it was coccidiosis and medicated my flock.

This morning, upon further inspection of the lethargic bird, it looks more like she's pooping out her actual intestinal tract. At first, i thought she was constipated for some reason, so i thought i would just help her get it out and then see if i could clean her up and help her heal. But when i put my (gloved) fingers on the part coming out, i realized the protrusion is lined. It feels exactly like the intestinal lining. (I cleaned some meat chickens a couple days ago for the first time, so this is a recently familiar feeling.)

I've never read about this. Her abdomen is hot, so i'm assuming she's infected somehow. And i can't imagine how i could get it to go back in.

I was thinking i'd try to clean her up to make sure what's going on, but it seems like the only thing to do is dispatch her.

Help!

I'm not sure these pictures will be helpful. Holding her upside down with one hand and taking pictures with the other didn't result in very good pictures.

Possibly be a prolapsed rectum. In any case, I would take her to the vet, the pictures are a bit fuzzy but I can understand trying to take a pic with a flopping bird!! Is there anyway something could have gotten to her?

She's only 11 weeks old. No where near laying age. Is that possible? I can't take her to the vet.

When i looked, i didn't find any injuries around the vent, just the protrusion from the vent.

A gentle warm soak in a shallow bath to clean it up and maybe you can see it better. She is young for a prolapse, maybe you can get a better look. Check for any signs of an injury as opposed to prolapse so you know if you need to be looking for predators.

Looks like prolapsed vent to me. Dip her in cool water (not hot, not cold) to clean the area. Apply some hemorrhoid creme to the area, honey if you don't have that and gently try to push it back in. The cool water and hemm creme/honey should shrink the tissue. Give her some electrolytes/vitamins in her water if you have it, maybe some yogurt, eggs to eat. Definitely can happen before laying, it happened to my 6 week old showgirl a few months ago. Good luck!

You probably are but definitely keep her separate until the prolapse stays in...

I used a little honey and some cool water, like you said, and i was able to push it back in with a q-tip! That's one of the weirdest things i've ever done, but it really wasn't very difficult. Hopefully she'll recover ok. I'm about to feed her an egg and some vitamin water.

ConservaChick, i just got home from church and read your message, and went and peaked on her, and it looks like it's out again, though not as swollen this time.

Should i expect a lot of that?

How long should i wait -making sure it stays in- before i put her back with the flock.

She was eating and drinking, and now she's turned her nose up to it again. Is there something i can do to help it stay in? Or do i just have to keep pushing it back in?
