BLRW = Blue Laced Red Wyandotte

I decided to put mine in cartons for hatching. I used cheesecloth on the bottom of the bator (read it in a pamphlet on incubating) I'll let you all know how well it works out.

For those who use the cartons.....what type do you use? Cardboard, polystyrene, or plastic?

I've just read about the cheesecloth on the bottom for the first time today! I am on day 18 with 42 eggs in the incubator.

Is it too late to add cheesecloth? Is this to make it easier on the chicks feet or to prevent egg rolling?

Thanks!

I used the paper pulp type..... it's what I had and I figure it breathes more.... I added the cheescloth when I bumped up the humidity on day 18. Used it folded in half so it provides surface but still allows air and humidity to pass thru it.

My last hatch,I used paper cartons. It was at least as good as those without the cartons, maybe better. I still had 2 chicks pip and not hatch, but at least I know it wasn't because they got rolled over. They seemed to zip quicker. I don't use the rubber shelf liner because on my first 2 hatches this year I did and I had chicks get stuck to the liner. These were chicks having a hard time getting out already. The others did fine. The liner just seemed more unforgiving of those chicks with hatch issues. I had a few eggs that pipped, got rolled over, then stuck to the liner. It was awful, having to pull them off the liner.

ok so i am totally going to use the carton because i heard some of the sob stories of people who had eggs rool and mess up other hatches.. so im using the carton.. no rubber matting.. yet. its day 19 ... nothing yet.. but its earlly still..
im hoping for a good hatch

I'm sure they will pop out any time~ all of my eggs look good except a few of the mille, blue, blue mottled, and black mottled d'uccles. I guess d'uccles jst don't like me! I left them in though-I always give eggs the benefit of the doubt until day 18-unless they stink!
