Ivermectin.....paste?

Welcome to BYC!

Can you share your math on this?
I've had several vets as well as people that have had chickens for DECADES, a pea size is completely safe.. No math needed.. I swear, chicken people are as bad as horse people.. A bunch of know it all personalities.. Everyone relax.. If you don't want to use the paste on your chickens, fine but someone else using it is OK.

While it might be safe, the math is easy to do, and I promise you that a pea size amount is way more than is recommended.

The amount listed in all of the vet books I have say the dose is 0.2 mg to 1 mg per kg with the smaller one being the most common.

Ivermectin paste in the US contains 18.7 mg per ml, so the max dose formula for a five pound chicken is:
5 / 2.2 x 1 / 18.7 = 0.12 ml
A pea sized amount is *2.5 times* more than that, which IMO is too much.

The formula for the most commonly posted amount for a five pound chicken is:
5 / 2.2 x 0.2 / 18.7 = 0.025 ml

For anyone reading this in the future, I just did the math on the 1.87% ivermectin paste for horses. Dosage comes out to the pea-size drop mentioned by a previous poster for a chicken.
Thanks! I AM reading this in the future, and was bummed out until I got to this post and the one above it!

No need to give Pagan ivomec to pups takes heart worms 6 months to become adults to lay eggs however when they are four months old .safe guard paste for horses I have diluted in distilled water keep in fridge just a little math and shake well I use a m pups .piperzize only if problems. One sad note can't get Ren O sal tablets anymore for chicks it promoted growth and we're more vibrarant and for grown fowl them shiny green worms all pills were the bomb. However my pa has use two tsp of lye in 5 gals of boiled water put enough whole oats to feed flock strain then and fed to the fowl he sweated by it for dewormer

Why have you diluted the Safeguard? The chicken dose is 0.23 ml per pound for 5 consecutive days. If you are diluting it, you are probably under dosing.

My pa has used lye 2 tso to 5 gals of boiling water add to enough whole oats to feed the flock let them soak for a while strain them good and feed the flock he swore by it I figured it be bad for them but behold his fowl made their mark at high merits

To be trueful I used several different wormers for fowl that way they never get resistant to one but to be honest valbazen was my favorite dewormer one shot deal right down the throat
